Full Description
The Palomino Islands and the sea lion colony
The Palomino Islands lie in the Pacific, a short distance off the coast of Callao, and shelter one of the largest colonies of sea lions in the area, with thousands of animals resting on the rocks and swimming around the boat. The islands are protected as part of a nature reserve.
The main event is the swim: with a wetsuit, life jacket and an instructor in the water, you slip in among curious sea lions that often swim close. Do not touch the animals, do not throw waste into the sea, and respect the instructions of the crew. It is one of the best wildlife experiences you can have near Lima.
The yacht trip from La Punta
The trip starts at the port of La Punta in Callao, where you board a comfortable yacht with a bathroom. The route passes San Lorenzo Island, the naval base and El Fronton, then reaches the Palomino Islands after about an hour and a half.
The crew and the guide speak English and Spanish and explain the route, the birds and the marine life. Seasickness medication is provided, but a light breakfast is the best advice before boarding. Bring a jacket, as the sea breeze is cool, and sunglasses and sunscreen for the reflection on the water.
Swimming, wildlife and what to expect
The water here is fed by the cool Humboldt Current, so it can feel cold, and the wetsuit is essential. You will hear the sea lions before you see them, and the smell of the colony can be strong for a few minutes until you get used to it. Humboldt penguins and guano birds live on the rocks.
The swim itself is short, around half an hour in the water. Fins and mask are not included, so bring your own if you want them. Children and non-swimmers should check the age and safety limits in the booking panel or ask us before booking, because the life jacket and instructor help but the sea can be rough.
Practical visit: meeting point, options and what to bring
The meeting point is at the port in La Punta, Callao, and a taxi from central Lima takes about forty-five minutes. Hotel pickup is not included in either option. The default option lasts about four and a half hours and includes lunch, and the shorter option lasts about three and a half hours without lunch.
The nature reserve conservation fee, which includes use of the private pier, is not included, and neither are towels, tips or fins and mask. Bring swimwear, a towel, a jacket and sunscreen. The trip can be cancelled for sea conditions, and we help you reschedule or arrange a refund.
