Coron to El Nido 3-Day Off-Grid Island Expedition
4.8 (163 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This Coron to El Nido expedition turns the crossing between Palawan's two island hubs into three days of real adventure. Instead of the fast ferry, you sail by traditional outrigger boat through the Calamian Islands and the remote Linapacan group, snorkelling coral reefs, swimming off empty beaches and sleeping two nights in simple native huts at island basecamps. A licensed captain, local guides and an on-board cook look after you, with breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinking water included. Life is deliberately simple: minimal electricity, no Wi-Fi and shared bathrooms. The trip is shared with other travellers, starts with a briefing in Coron town and ends in El Nido town. It suits adventurous couples, friends and solo travellers aged 16 and over.

Full Description
Coron town and the Calamian Islands
The expedition begins in Coron town on Busuanga Island, the gateway to the Calamian Islands in northern Palawan. Coron is known for its limestone cliffs, clear lakes and Second World War shipwrecks, and most visitors fly in through Busuanga airport, about 30 to 40 minutes by road from town. The evening before departure you attend a briefing at the expedition office in town, where the team explains the route, safety and how to pack.
On the first morning the boat heads south and west through the Calamian group, passing Culion and a scatter of smaller islands. Reefs here are rich in hard corals and reef fish, and the first snorkelling stops come within a few hours. Is a Coron to El Nido boat trip worth it compared with the ferry? If you have the time, it is the most memorable way to travel between the two.
The Linapacan islands
Between Coron and El Nido lies Linapacan, a quiet municipality of small islands that few travellers ever see. Its waters are famous among Filipinos for their remarkable clarity, and its beaches are often completely empty. The crew chooses the stops according to wind and tide, so each day brings different reefs, sandbars and coves for swimming and snorkelling.
There are no shops, hotels or roads on most of these islands, only fishing families and coconut palms. This is the heart of the trip: long, slow days in the water and on the sand, with lunch cooked on board and served on a beach. Please follow the guides' rules on coral and wildlife, and leave nothing behind; littering is strictly not allowed on the expedition.
Island basecamps and native huts
Each night you sleep at a beachfront basecamp on an isolated island. The huts are traditional structures of bamboo and palm leaves, each with a mattress, pillows, sheets and a mosquito net, suitable for two adults. They have no fan or air conditioning, but the sea breeze keeps them pleasant. Toilets and showers are shared, and electricity is minimal, so bring a power bank and a headlamp.
Evenings are spent around the camp with a freshly cooked dinner, sunsets over the sea and some of the darkest, starriest skies in the Philippines. Meals are Filipino dishes based on fish, chicken, rice and vegetables; halal food is limited in Palawan, so tell us your needs when booking and we will ask the cook to prepare fish and vegetable meals for you.
Arrival in northern El Nido
On the third day the boat crosses the last open stretch towards the north of the El Nido municipality and lands at San Fernando port, from where a transfer is included to El Nido town. Along the way you see the first limestone islands of the El Nido coastline, a fine preview of Bacuit Bay. You arrive in El Nido town in the afternoon, ready to check into your hotel.
From El Nido you can continue with the town's famous island-hopping Tours A, B, C or D, or travel on to Puerto Princesa by road in about five to six hours. Many travellers plan this expedition between a few days in Coron and a few days in El Nido, so it replaces the fast ferry of about four hours with an unforgettable journey.
Best time to go and sea conditions
The best time to sail from Coron to El Nido is the dry season from December to May, when the sea is generally calm and the skies clear. From June to November the southwest monsoon and the typhoon season can make the crossing rough; trips are only run when it is safe, and the Coast Guard can suspend departures. Perfect weather can never be promised, even in the dry months.
All guests need valid environmental tickets for Coron, Culion, Linapacan and El Nido, which are a government requirement. If you already have one, bring it; if not, the team arranges them locally at the briefing. Your main luggage is stowed during the trip, so pack a small dry bag with essentials for three days.
