Full Description

Puerto Princesa Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park protects one of the longest navigable underground rivers in the world, flowing for more than eight kilometres beneath a limestone mountain before it meets the sea. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for its cave system and for the complete ecosystem around it, from mountain forest to mangroves and coral. Visitors explore the first part of the river by paddle boat, wearing a helmet and listening to an audio guide.

Inside, the boatman's lamp reveals tall chambers, stalactites and rock formations that have been compared to fruits, animals and figures, while bats and swiftlets fly overhead. The paddle trip lasts about 45 minutes. Is the Underground River worth visiting? Yes; it is Palawan's most famous sight, and entry is limited each day, which is why booking in advance through a tour like this one matters.

Sabang and the boat ride to the cave

How to get to the Underground River: from Puerto Princesa it is about two hours by road to the small coastal village of Sabang, through farmland and forested hills. From Sabang wharf, an outrigger boat carries you for about 20 minutes along a coastline of cliffs and beaches to the cove at the river mouth. A short boardwalk through the forest then leads to the cave entrance.

Look out for monitor lizards and long-tailed macaques near the beach; keep food out of sight and do not feed or approach them. After the cave, lunch is served back at Sabang wharf, a buffet of local dishes. If you chose one, you then enjoy a zip line along the bay or a gentle paddle boat ride through the mangrove forest of Sabang before the drive back to the city.

Firefly watching in the mangroves

After a rest at your hotel, the second part of the day takes you about an hour from the city to a mangrove-lined river, where fireflies gather in the trees after dark. You sit in a quiet paddle boat while the guide steers slowly along the banks; the insects glow in the branches like small lights, and on many nights the water itself sparkles with bioluminescent plankton when touched by the paddle.

Depending on the number of guests, dinner is served before or after the boat ride, with local dishes; tell us about any dietary needs, including halal or vegetarian, when booking. Flash photography and torches disturb the fireflies, so cameras stay in your bag. Darker nights near the new moon give the best show, and the ride lasts about 45 minutes.

Puerto Princesa and planning your day

Puerto Princesa is the capital of Palawan and its main gateway, with flights from Manila in about one hour twenty minutes and from Cebu in about one hour fifteen. Pickup for this tour is included within about five kilometres of Puerto Princesa International Airport, which covers most hotels in the city. The day starts at about 8:00 and ends after the firefly ride in the evening.

The best time to visit the Underground River is the dry season from December to May. From June to November waves can close the river mouth to boats for safety, sometimes at short notice. The site also closes occasionally for maintenance; if that happens we move your date or suggest an alternative. An environmental fee is collected locally at the Underground River.
