Full Description

Oslob Whale Shark Watching

Oslob is a coastal town at the southern end of Cebu, about three hours by road from Cebu City. At the village of Tan-awan, whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea and gentle filter feeders, come close to shore in the early morning. Small paddle boats take visitors a short way out, and you can watch from the boat or slip into the water with a mask and snorkel for about 30 minutes.

The encounters take place in a regulated area where local boatmen attract the sharks close to shore, so strict rules apply: no touching, no flash photography, no sunscreen in the water and keeping the distance set by the staff. Is Oslob whale shark watching worth it? Seeing these huge, spotted animals glide past is unforgettable, and following the rules helps protect them. Sightings depend on nature and are never guaranteed.

When and How to Visit Oslob

The whale shark watching area operates only in the morning, roughly from dawn until around midday, and queues grow quickly after sunrise. That is why this Oslob day trip from Cebu leaves between about 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning: arriving early means a shorter wait and calmer water. A mandatory briefing explains the rules before you board.

Many travellers wonder how to get to Oslob from Cebu City. Buses run along the coast, but the trip is long and slow; with this tour our driver takes you directly, and the coordinator handles registration and fees. The best time to visit Oslob is the dry season from December to May; from June to November the sea can be rough and the activity may be paused for safety.

Tumalog Falls

A short ride from the whale shark area, Tumalog Falls is one of the prettiest waterfalls in southern Cebu. Instead of a single powerful drop, the water spreads in thin threads over a tall cliff covered in moss and ferns, falling like a curtain into a shallow, clear pool. The spray keeps the air cool even in the midday heat.

You reach the falls by a steep access road, usually on a local motorcycle shuttle or on foot downhill, and spend about 45 minutes to an hour swimming, cooling off and taking photos. In the driest months the flow can be lighter, while after rain it becomes fuller and more dramatic. The entrance is included in this tour.

Sumilon Island Sandbar

Just off the Oslob coast lies Sumilon Island, home to one of the earliest marine protected areas in the Philippines, set up in the 1970s. Its sandbar is a curving tongue of white sand that shifts with the tides and seasons, surrounded by clear turquoise water that is perfect for swimming.

The boat ride from the mainland takes about 10 to 15 minutes and is included, together with the Sumilon fees. Spend your time on the sand, swimming in the shallows and enjoying views back to the green hills of Cebu. At high tide the sandbar is smaller, so timing depends on the sea on the day, and our coordinator plans the stop accordingly.

The South Coast Drive and Silog Breakfast

The road to Oslob follows Cebu's south-east coast through fishing towns, old Spanish-era churches and watchtowers, with the sea always close. After the early start, a Filipino silog breakfast is served: garlic fried rice, a fried egg and a main such as cured meat or fish. If you do not eat pork or need another option, please tell us when booking.

Lunch and other food are not included, so you can choose where to eat on the way back. Because this is a joined trip, the vehicle is shared with other guests and follows a fixed timing. The ride back to Cebu takes around three hours, arriving in the afternoon.
