Full Description

Oslob whale shark watching

Oslob is a coastal town on the south-east coast of Cebu, about three to four hours by road from Cebu City. In the village of Tan-awan, whale sharks come close to shore almost every morning, which has made Oslob whale shark watching one of the most popular day trips from Cebu. The whale shark is the largest fish in the sea, a slow-moving filter feeder that eats plankton and tiny shrimp and is harmless to people. Seeing one glide beneath you, its back patterned with pale spots, is an unforgettable moment.

After registration and a marine briefing, small paddled outrigger boats take you a short way offshore, where you snorkel for about 30 minutes with a mask and life jacket. Sightings are very likely but never guaranteed, because these are wild animals. In peak season there can be a wait of two to three hours before your turn, which is why the day starts so early.

Responsible whale shark encounters

Local fishermen feed the whale sharks small amounts of shrimp to keep them near the shore, and the practice is openly debated by marine scientists, who worry about its effects on the animals' natural behaviour and migration. We share this honestly so you can make an informed choice. The interaction is managed by the local government of Oslob, which sets the rules and the time allowed in the water.

Those rules are strict and important: never touch or ride a whale shark, keep a distance of several metres from its head and tail, do not use sunscreen or lotion before entering the water, and use no flash photography. Wear a rash guard instead of sunscreen for sun protection. Our guide reminds everyone of the rules on the boat, and a calm, respectful approach usually gives the best and longest views.

The south Cebu coast and lunch in Badian

After Oslob the road follows the coast around the southern tip of Cebu, through the towns of Santander and Samboan, then turns north along the west coast towards Badian. The drive takes about one and a half to two hours and passes fishing villages, rice fields and views across the strait to the island of Negros on clear days.

Lunch is served in Badian before the canyoneering, giving you time to rest and change after the early start. Breakfast in Oslob is not included but is easy to buy near the whale shark area. Halal-certified food is limited in the south of Cebu; seafood, chicken and vegetarian dishes are usually available, and we are happy to advise in advance if you have dietary needs.

Kawasan canyoneering in Badian

The afternoon belongs to Kawasan canyoneering, a guided descent of the Matutinao River through a gorge of smooth limestone in the hills of Badian. You change into your helmet, life jacket and water shoes, meet your certified canyoneering guide and set off along the riverbed, swimming through emerald pools, sliding down water-polished chutes and scrambling over rocks for about three hours.

The signature moments are the cliff jumps, from low ledges up to several metres high, but every jump is optional and there is a safer path around each one. The minimum age is four, and a moderate level of fitness is recommended because the route involves slippery rock and swimming. The guides may shorten the route after heavy rain, when the river runs higher and faster.

Kawasan Falls and the return to Cebu City

Whether you take every jump or none, the descent ends at Kawasan Falls, a cascade of several tiers spilling into wide turquoise pools framed by forest. It is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Philippines, and arriving from upstream after hours in the canyon is far more rewarding than walking in from the road.

Is a Kawasan Falls day trip from Cebu City worth the long hours? For travellers with limited time on the island, combining both highlights in one day saves an extra early start. After a final swim and a change of clothes, the drive back takes about four hours, with arrival at your hotel usually between 6:00 and 8:00 PM depending on traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

The default option is a shared tour with other travellers in the vehicle and with the guides. A private option is also available with your own vehicle, driver and guide for the day; under Oslob's rules the whale shark boat is always shared with other guests.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

On the shared tour the timing is set for the group. With the private option you have more flexibility on pickup area and stops. Another option adds Tumalog Falls near Oslob before the canyoneering.

How many people can join?

The shared tour is run with a mixed group in an air-conditioned vehicle. For families or groups, the private option keeps the vehicle and guide for your party only; message us if you are a large group.

Is the price per person or per group?

All options are priced per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. The shared option includes pickup and drop-off in Cebu City and on Mactan Island. The private option covers a wider area, including Moalboal, Badian and Oslob, with airport pickup on request.

What is included?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, an air-conditioned vehicle, the whale shark watching fee, mask and life jacket, a marine briefing, the Kawasan canyoneering fee with a certified guide, helmet, life jacket, water shoes and lunch in Badian.

How long is the tour?

About sixteen hours, from pickup between 2:00 and 2:30 AM to return between 6:00 and 8:00 PM, depending on waiting time in Oslob and traffic.

Are whale sharks guaranteed?

Whale sharks are seen in Oslob on most operating days, but they are wild animals and sightings are never guaranteed. Please follow the no-touching, no-sunscreen and distance rules.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

The minimum age for canyoneering is four. The day is long and physical, so it is not suitable for pregnant travellers, people with back problems or travellers with reduced mobility.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a rash guard, water shoes, a towel, a change of clothes, a dry bag, a waterproof phone case and some cash for breakfast and extras.

When is the best time to go?

December to May usually brings calm seas and clear rivers. From June to November weather can change quickly and activities may be postponed for safety.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your option and date in the booking panel on this page and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and shares your pickup time the day before.
