Mactan Beach Scuba Diving Experience for Beginners, Cebu
4.9 (150 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This beginner scuba experience on Mactan Island is the easiest way to breathe underwater for the first time in Cebu. No diving certificate is needed. An experienced, insured English-speaking instructor gives you a personal briefing, practises the basic skills with you in shallow water and then guides you on two beach dives over the reef, with a surface break in between. Full scuba equipment, underwater photos and videos, the dive site entrance and the use of showers and lockers are included, and we collect you from your hotel on Mactan. It suits curious beginners, couples and families with older children who want a safe, unhurried first dive close to their hotel. A shorter one-dive option is also available.

Full Description
Mactan Island: Cebu's Gateway to the Sea
Mactan is the flat coral island just off mainland Cebu, linked to Cebu City by bridges and home to Mactan-Cebu International Airport and most of the area's beach hotels. Its east and south coasts face the Hilutungan Channel, where fringing reefs drop from shallow sandy patches into deeper walls. That geography makes scuba diving on Mactan unusually convenient: you can be in the water less than an hour after leaving your hotel.
Many visitors ask whether Mactan diving is worth it compared with famous sites further south. For a first dive, it is ideal. The beach entry is gentle, the water is warm all year at around 27 to 30 degrees, and visibility is often good, so you can focus on breathing calmly and enjoying the reef rather than on long boat transfers.
The Try Dive: How Your First Dive Works
Your instructor starts with a relaxed briefing on how the equipment works, how to equalise your ears and the simple hand signals used underwater. You then practise a few basic skills standing in shallow water, such as clearing a little water from your mask and recovering your regulator, until you feel comfortable. Only then do you swim out and descend slowly along the reef.
Beginner dives stay shallow, within the limits your instructor sets for first-time divers, and your instructor stays right beside you the whole time. With the two-dive option you surface for a break, rest and chat about what you saw, then go back down with more confidence. Most people find the second dive is where they truly relax and start to enjoy the experience.
Marine Life on the Mactan Reefs
The house reefs off Mactan are home to colourful reef fish such as damselfish, butterflyfish, clownfish in their anemones and small groups of snappers, along with hard and soft corals, sea stars and giant clams in the shallows. Shoals of sardines sometimes pass along the reef edge, and green sea turtles are seen from time to time.
Nothing in the sea is guaranteed, and all marine life is watched without touching or chasing it. Your instructor helps you keep good buoyancy so that you do not disturb the corals. Because the dive includes underwater photos and videos, you can concentrate on the moment and still take home pictures of your first breaths beneath the surface.
Practical Visit: Timing, Facilities and Getting There
Start times run from about 9:00 to 13:00, and the two-dive experience lasts around four hours including the briefing and surface break; the single dive takes about two hours. The dive centre has hot and cold showers, toilets, lockers and changing rooms. An environmental fee is paid locally on the day, and food and drinks are not included.
Hotel transfers are included for hotels on Mactan Island. If you are staying in Cebu City, which is roughly 30 to 60 minutes away depending on traffic, we can arrange a private transfer for you. The best time of year is the dry season from December to May, when the sea is usually calmest; from June to November dives can be rescheduled if weather makes the water unsafe.

Do I need a diving licence or experience?
No. This is designed for complete beginners. Your instructor teaches you everything you need before you go underwater.
Can we change the plan or the pace?
You choose your start time and between one or two dives. Underwater, your instructor adapts the pace to you and you can end the dive at any moment.
How many people can join?
Couples, friends and families can all book together, with each diver guided closely by the instructor team.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per diver. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for the one-dive and two-dive options.

How long does it take?
About four hours for two dives, or about two hours for the single dive, including the briefing.
Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?
Children from about 10 years old who swim comfortably can usually join. It is not suitable for travellers who cannot walk into the sea from the beach or carry light equipment.

Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a change of clothes and a little cash for the environmental fee.
