Full Description

Oslob and the Whale Shark Watching Area

Oslob is a quiet fishing town about 120 kilometres south of Cebu City, known for its coral-stone church and the ruins of a Spanish-era barracks by the sea. Its fame today, though, comes from Tan-awan, a stretch of coast just north of the town where whale sharks are seen close to shore almost every morning. These spotted giants can grow longer than a bus, yet they are gentle filter feeders that eat plankton and small fish.

The watching area is run by the local community and operates only in the morning, which is why this Oslob whale shark tour leaves Cebu at about 3:00. On arrival you receive a queue number, and while you wait you can have breakfast. If your number is called early, breakfast is served after the encounter instead.

A Responsible Whale Shark Encounter

Before entering the water every visitor attends a mandatory briefing by accredited local staff. The rules are clear: do not touch or ride the sharks, keep the distance the staff indicate, no flash photography and no sunscreen or lotion in the water. Local boatmen attract the sharks close to the shore here, so these rules and the limited time in the water are important to protect the animals.

You then board the official paddle boat and spend about 30 minutes out at the site, either watching from the boat or snorkelling with mask, snorkel and life vest. Is the Oslob whale shark experience worth it? For many travellers it is the moment of their trip, as the sharks glide just beneath the surface. Remember that sightings depend on nature and cannot be guaranteed.

Tumalog Falls

After the encounter the tour continues to Tumalog Falls, a short drive inland. Here water slides down a high wall of rock covered in moss and ferns, breaking into countless fine streams that look like a silver curtain. At the base is a shallow, cold pool where you can stand under the spray and cool off after the morning at sea.

The way down to the falls is steep, usually covered by a local motorcycle shuttle or on foot. Allow about 45 minutes to an hour. The flow is fullest after rain and gentler in the driest months, but the falls are lovely at any time of year, and the visit is included in this day trip.

The South-East Coast Road from Cebu City

Many visitors ask how to get to Oslob from Cebu City. The coastal highway runs south through Carcar, known for its old houses, and past a string of fishing towns and Spanish-era churches facing the Bohol Strait. Public buses are slow and do not fit the early whale shark hours, so a door-to-door vehicle is the practical choice.

The best time to visit Oslob is the dry season from December to May, when the sea is usually calm. In typhoon season, roughly June to November, the activity may be suspended for safety, and we will contact you about a new date. On the way back you can stop for lunch, which is not included, and you arrive in Cebu in the afternoon.
