Full Description

Whale shark watching in Oslob

Oslob lies on the south-east coast of Cebu, a long early-morning drive from Cebu City. Just off the village of Tan-awan, whale sharks gather close to shore on most mornings, and a close encounter with the largest fish on earth is the reason most visitors make the trip. These gentle giants can grow longer than a bus, yet they feed only on plankton and tiny shrimp and pose no danger to swimmers.

After registration at the waiting facility and a short briefing, you board a small paddled outrigger boat and slip into the water with a mask and life jacket. The session in the water is short, usually around 30 minutes, and the boatmen position you so the whale sharks pass nearby. Sightings are very likely but never guaranteed, because these are wild animals free to come and go.

Whale shark rules and responsible watching

The whale sharks of Oslob are attracted close to shore by small amounts of shrimp offered by local fishermen, and the practice is debated by marine scientists who study its effects on the animals' behaviour. The interaction is managed solely by the Oslob local government, which sets the procedures and the time allowed in the water; we tell you this openly so that you can make an informed choice.

Please follow the rules carefully: never touch or chase a whale shark, keep a distance of several metres, do not wear sunscreen or lotion in the water and use no flash. A rash guard is the best sun protection. Boatmen can take underwater photos for a small optional fee, and fins can be rented on site, though many guests find the life jacket enough in the calm water.

Across south Cebu to Moalboal

From Oslob the road curves around the southern tip of Cebu and runs north along the west coast to Moalboal, a drive of roughly two to two and a half hours through fishing villages and small towns, with views across the strait to Negros. Breakfast and lunch are not included, but your guide stops at local eateries on the way where you can buy a meal.

Along the drive your licensed guide shares stories of Cebu's history, island life and fishing traditions, which makes the long journey part of the experience. Halal-certified food is limited in the south of Cebu; grilled fish, chicken, rice and vegetable dishes are easy to find, and if you have dietary needs we are happy to advise before your trip.

The Moalboal sardine run

Moalboal is famous for one of the most extraordinary sights in Philippine waters: enormous shoals of sardines that live along the reef just off Panagsama Beach, a short swim from the shore. The fish move as one shimmering body, twisting into columns and balls that darken the water and then part around you as you swim through.

Is the Moalboal sardine run worth it? For most snorkellers it is the highlight of the day, and unlike many marine encounters it happens close to the surface almost every day of the year. Visibility is best on calm, sunny days, and the reef edge where the sardines gather drops steeply into deep blue water. Stay with your guide, wear your life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer and watch for boat traffic near the shore.

Sea turtles and the Moalboal reef

The shallow reef of Moalboal is also home to green and hawksbill sea turtles, which graze on seagrass and algae and rise slowly to breathe. Seeing one resting on the sand or gliding past the coral is a lovely contrast to the busy sardine shoals, and your guide knows the spots where they usually feed.

Turtles are protected in the Philippines, so keep a distance of several metres, never touch or block their way to the surface and avoid crowding them with other swimmers. After about two hours of snorkelling you can rinse off at the shower facilities, dry off with the towel provided and relax for the drive back to Cebu City or Mactan, arriving in the afternoon or evening depending on traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

It is a shared tour with other travellers in the van and on the boats. If you want a vehicle and guide only for your family or friends, message our team on WhatsApp and we will check the options.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The order of the day is set by the whale shark hours in Oslob and the drive to Moalboal, so changes are limited. Your guide adapts snorkelling time to sea conditions and the group.

How many people can join?

The tour runs as a small shared group in a modern air-conditioned van with a dedicated driver and a licensed guide.

Is the price per person or per group?

The tour is priced per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. Pickup and drop-off are included from hotels in Cebu City and on Mactan Island.

What is included?

A licensed guide and driver, hotel transfers by air-conditioned van, life jackets and snorkelling gear, Oslob and Moalboal admission fees including the waiting facility fee, travel accident insurance, bottled water, towel rental, shower and restroom access and an action camera on request.

How long is the tour?

About 10 to 15 hours depending on pickup time, waiting time in Oslob and traffic on the way back.

Sightings in Oslob are very likely, but whale sharks are wild animals and are never guaranteed. Please follow the no-touching, no-sunscreen and distance rules.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

The minimum age is seven. Getting in and out of small boats and the water requires some agility, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users or travellers with reduced mobility.

Swimwear, a rash guard, sandals, a change of clothes, a waterproof phone case and cash for meals, fins rental and tips.

When is the best time to go?

Whale sharks and sardines are present year-round, but December to May usually brings the calmest seas. From June to November weather may change the plan for safety.
