Full Description

Los Baños, the hot-spring town of Laguna

Los Baños lies about 60 km south of Manila on the shore of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines, at the foot of the forested Mount Makiling. Its name means the baths in Spanish, after the natural hot springs that have drawn visitors since colonial times. Today it is a lively university town surrounded by research gardens, forest reserves and roadside stalls selling local snacks.

The drive from Manila takes about 1 h 30 to 2 h depending on traffic, and Los Baños is the perfect first stop to stretch your legs. Your guide introduces the region, its volcanic landscape and the farming life of Laguna, before the day turns towards the river. The cooler air under the mountain and the green scenery are a refreshing change after the city.

The rail trolley ride and Los Baños coconut pie

One of the most unusual experiences of the day is the trolley ride. In parts of Laguna, small wooden carts run on the railway line, pushed by hand by their operators, and they have long been a practical way for locals to travel between villages. Sitting on the low bench as the trolley rolls along the tracks, past houses, gardens and rice fields, gives you a close and cheerful look at everyday life in the province.

The other local tradition is buko pie, a soft, flaky pie filled with tender young coconut, which Los Baños is famous for across the country. Your guide takes you to taste a slice, warm if you are lucky, and you can buy a whole pie to take back to Manila as pasalubong, the Filipino custom of bringing food gifts home from a trip.

Up the Pagsanjan gorge by paddle boat

From Los Baños the road continues east to Pagsanjan, an old Laguna town known for its Spanish-era stone arch and, above all, for its river. Here you board a narrow wooden canoe with two local boatmen, who paddle upstream into a deep gorge where cliffs covered in ferns, vines and hanging roots rise high on both sides and small cascades pour into the river.

At each rapid the boatmen jump onto the rocks and haul the canoe upwards with impressive skill, a tradition passed down through generations. The trip upstream takes about an hour. Many people ask how to get to Pagsanjan Falls: this boat journey through the gorge is the only way, and it is a big part of the adventure. Life vests are provided, and tips for the boatmen are customary and at your discretion.

Pagsanjan Falls and the raft under the water

At the head of the gorge, Pagsanjan Falls drops about 90 m from the cliff into a deep pool framed by forest. Here you switch to a bamboo raft that is pulled across the pool and under the falling water into the hollow behind the cascade, a thundering, drenching moment that most visitors remember long after the trip.

Is Pagsanjan Falls worth visiting? For nature lovers it is one of the most spectacular escapes from the capital, combining a jungle river, rapids and a powerful waterfall. The falls are fullest after the rains, while the boats run most smoothly in the drier months; in heavy rain or typhoon conditions the river can be closed for safety. The return downstream is quicker, as the boatmen steer the canoe through the rapids with the current.

Jungle pools, lunch and planning your day

Before or after the falls there is time to swim in the cool natural pools along the river, surrounded by green walls of jungle. The water is refreshing on a hot day, and the setting feels far from the traffic of Manila. Lunch is included, served at a local restaurant near the river; seafood, chicken, rice and vegetable dishes are typical, and halal options in this area are limited, so tell us your needs when booking.

The best time to visit Pagsanjan Falls is roughly November to February, when the falls are full and the river is usually calm enough for the boats; December to May is the driest period overall. The tour returns to Metro Manila in the early evening after about 10 hours. Bring a change of clothes, as you will be wet from the moment you reach the falls.

On the shared tour the route and timing are fixed. On the private option you can adjust the pace and the length of each stop within the day.

How many people fit in the boat?

Swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes, water shoes, sunscreen, a waterproof bag and some cash for drinks and tips.

What is the best season?

Roughly November to February, when the falls are full and the river is calm enough. In typhoon season heavy rain can close the river.
