Full Description

Corregidor Island, the Fortress of Manila Bay

Corregidor is a small, tadpole-shaped island lying where Manila Bay meets the South China Sea, between the Bataan peninsula and the Cavite coast. Its position made it the natural guardian of the bay: the Spanish kept a signal station and lighthouse here, and in the early 20th century it became a heavily armed harbour fortress. During the Second World War the island endured a long siege in 1942 and saw fierce fighting again in 1945, and it is now preserved as a national shrine and open-air war memorial.

A private Corregidor Island tour is the easiest way to see it in one day: the island has very few services, so organised transport, boat and tram matter. Is Corregidor worth visiting? For anyone interested in history, the scale of the ruins, the silence of the island and the views over the bay make it one of the most moving places in the Philippines.

Malinta Tunnel

Malinta Tunnel was cut through Malinta Hill in the 1920s and 1930s as a bomb-proof complex, with a long main passage and dozens of side tunnels used for storage, offices and a hospital. During the siege it sheltered thousands of soldiers, nurses and civilians, and many of the dramatic events of the war years unfolded inside its concrete walls.

The tram tour stops at the tunnel entrance so you can walk into the main passage and feel its cool, echoing air. Some side tunnels are partly collapsed and remain closed for safety. The tunnel sits on Bottomside, the narrow waist of the island, and the stop gives a good sense of how life continued underground while the surface was under bombardment.

Topside: Barracks, Batteries and the Pacific War Memorial

Topside, the highest plateau of the island, holds its most impressive ruins. The skeleton of the Mile-Long Barracks, once housing for the garrison, stretches along the ridge, its concrete frame scarred by shells. Around the island stand the old coastal gun batteries, where huge cannons and mortars still sit in their emplacements, rusting quietly above the sea.

Nearby is the Pacific War Memorial, a white domed rotunda built in the 1960s, with an open circle in the roof that lets a beam of light fall onto the altar at midday, and a tall steel sculpture of an eternal flame beyond it. The tram also passes memorials to the Filipino soldiers and a peaceful garden of remembrance, offering a balanced view of the island's history from all sides.

The Spanish Lighthouse and the Views over Manila Bay

The lighthouse on the highest point of the island dates back to the Spanish period of the 19th century and was rebuilt after the war in its original style. From its terrace the views stretch across Manila Bay to the city skyline on clear days, over the green mountains of Bataan and towards the open sea, making it the best photo stop of the tour.

How to get to Corregidor from Manila? Visitors need a boat, and departures are early, which is why pickup is at 04:00. With this option our private car takes you to the boat and back, so you avoid the early-morning taxis and the waiting. The best time to visit Corregidor is the dry season from December to May; from June to November boat crossings depend on the sea and may be rescheduled for safety.

Your Private Tour Style

The car, the driver and the timing of your transfers belong to your group alone. Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby with a name sign, there are no stops to collect other guests, and the driver is there for your group's comfort, from extra water to a break on the way back. Families with children, couples and small groups of friends all enjoy this calm start to a very early day.

On the island, the default option uses the regular boat and the guided tram tour shared with other visitors, which is how most people see Corregidor. If you prefer a boat only for your group, choose the fully private option with a private car and boat, available with an early or a later morning start. Guests staying in Clark or Subic can choose the option that starts from their hotel there.
