Full Description

Tagaytay, the cool ridge city above Taal Lake

Tagaytay sits on a long volcanic ridge in Cavite province, about 55 to 60 km south of Manila and some 600 to 700 m above sea level. Thanks to the altitude it is noticeably cooler and breezier than the capital, which has made it a favourite weekend escape for Manila families for decades. Its main road follows the edge of the ridge, so viewpoints, gardens and cafes open straight onto the great blue bowl of Taal Lake below.

Many visitors ask how to get to Tagaytay without driving in Manila traffic. On this tour our air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel and takes the expressway south, a drive of about 1 h 30 to 2 h each way depending on traffic. A Tagaytay day trip from Manila usually takes a full day, but this half-day format gives you the highlights in about five hours, perfect before an evening flight or a dinner in the city.

Taal Volcano and Taal Lake viewpoints

From the ridge you look down on Taal Lake, which fills a huge ancient caldera, and on Volcano Island in its middle. Taal Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines and erupted most recently in a major way in 2020, covering the area in ash. On calm days you can often see a thin plume of steam rising from the island, a reminder that the volcano is still very much alive.

The tour stops at the Tagaytay Point viewpoint on the ridge, where the panorama takes in the lake, the island and the mountains of Batangas beyond. Your guide explains how the caldera was formed, how the island holds its own crater lake, and how the communities around the shore have lived with the volcano for centuries. Visits to Volcano Island itself are restricted by the authorities, so the ridge is the safest and most beautiful place to admire it.

Tagaytay City Fruit Market and the pineapple fields

The rich volcanic soil around Tagaytay is excellent for fruit, and the city is especially known for its sweet pineapples. At the Tagaytay City Fruit Market, rows of stalls are piled high with pineapples, bananas, mangoes, papayas, young coconuts and seasonal fruits such as rambutan, lanzones and mangosteen, many of which travellers have never tasted before.

Your guide helps you choose and taste a few varieties (fruit purchases are at your own cost) and explains how they are grown and eaten in the Philippines. Behind the stalls stretch pineapple fields where you can see the plants growing low in long rows, with the fruit sitting at the centre of each spiky rosette. It is a short, colourful stop of about 15 minutes, and a lovely chance to bring back fresh fruit to your hotel.

People's Park in the Sky

People's Park in the Sky crowns Mount Sungay, the highest point in Tagaytay at around 700 m. The hilltop was chosen in the early 1980s for a grand guesthouse that was never completed, and the unfinished concrete structure was later turned into a public park with viewing terraces. A local jeepney carries visitors up the final steep road to the summit.

From the top the 360-degree panorama is the widest in the area: Taal Lake and Volcano Island on one side and, on clear days, the green plains of Laguna and the distant hills on the other. The summit is often breezy and sometimes wrapped in drifting clouds, which adds to its atmosphere. About one hour is planned here, enough to walk around the terraces, take photos and enjoy the cool air at your own pace.

Best time to visit Tagaytay

Tagaytay is pleasant all year, but the best time to visit Tagaytay for clear volcano views is the dry season from December to May, especially in the early morning. From June to November the rainy and typhoon season can bring clouds, fog and showers; the trip still runs on most days, and the misty ridge has its own charm, though views of the volcano may be partly hidden.

Is Tagaytay worth visiting on a short stay in Manila? For many travellers it is the easiest way to see the Philippine countryside and an active volcano without a long journey. The morning departure usually gives the clearest skies and the fewest crowds, while the afternoon tour is cooler as the sun drops. Halal food options in Tagaytay are limited; fruit is easy, and we can advise on places back in Manila.
