Full Description
Hidden Valley, a forest hollow in Laguna
Hidden Valley lies near the town of Alaminos in Laguna province, in the volcanic country between Mount Makiling and the crater lakes of southern Laguna. From the road you would hardly guess it is there: the land suddenly drops into a deep, crater-like hollow filled with dense rainforest, and the temperature falls as you descend among the trees. The valley has been protected as a private nature retreat for decades, which has kept its forest remarkably intact.
Many visitors ask how to get to Hidden Valley from Manila without a car. The drive takes about 2 hours from Makati, depending on traffic, through the Laguna countryside of coconut groves and rice fields. On this tour the transport, entrance fees and guide are all arranged, so you simply meet in Makati and relax on the way south.
The warm volcanic spring pools
The heart of Hidden Valley is its springs. Water heated deep underground by the region's volcanic activity rises naturally to the surface and feeds a series of pools set among the trees, some pleasantly warm and others cool and refreshing. The water is rich in minerals, and locals have long believed in its soothing effect on tired muscles.
You can move between the pools at your own pace, float under the canopy and listen to the birds and the running water. Unlike busy resort pools, the setting here is quiet and natural, with stone edges, ferns and hanging vines. Is Hidden Valley worth visiting? For travellers who want a gentle day in nature with warm water and fresh air, it is one of the most restful escapes from Manila.
Rainforest trails, giant trees and rare plants
Shaded trails lead from the pools deeper into the valley. Along the way you walk beneath giant old trees with buttress roots and strangler figs, past tree ferns, wild palms, orchids and other tropical plants that thrive in the humid microclimate of the hollow. Some of the trees are many centuries old, and the canopy is so thick that the forest floor stays cool even at midday.
Your guide points out the most remarkable trees and plants and explains how the valley's shape and the springs have created this pocket of rainforest. The trails are mostly well kept but include steps and uneven sections, so comfortable shoes are useful. At the lowest part of the valley a clear stream runs over the rocks, a beautiful spot for photos and a moment of silence.
Lunch and a slow day in nature
Lunch is included and served in the valley, giving you a relaxed break between swims and walks. Typical dishes include rice, chicken, fish and vegetables; halal food is not widely available outside Manila, so please tell us your dietary needs when booking and we will do our best to advise.
After lunch there is free time to return to the pools, rest on a shaded bench or explore another trail. Because the group is small, with no more than 15 travellers, the guide can adapt to the group's rhythm, and nobody feels rushed. It is a day built around relaxation rather than a long list of sights, perfect after busy days in the city or before a flight to the islands.
Best time to visit Hidden Valley
Hidden Valley can be enjoyed all year, because the warm pools and the forest shade make it pleasant even in the hottest months. The best time to visit Hidden Valley for dry trails and easy driving is the dry season from December to May. From June to November, rain makes the forest even greener, but trails can be slippery and roads slower; in typhoon conditions the trip may be rescheduled for safety.
Weekdays are usually quieter than weekends. The tour leaves Makati at 8:30 and returns in the late afternoon, after about 8 hours, so you avoid the earliest rush-hour starts and still have your evening free in Manila. Bring swimwear and a change of clothes, and leave space in your day for a long, peaceful soak.
