Moalboal Sardine Run and Kawasan Canyoneering Day Trip, Cebu

Overview

This day trip from Cebu packs the island's two favourite water adventures into one early-starting day. We collect you from your hotel in selected areas of Cebu at about 5:00 and drive south-west to Moalboal, where a local guide leads you snorkelling with the sardine run, a shimmering shoal just off the beach, where sea turtles may appear nearby. In the afternoon you join the Kawasan canyoneering route, jumping, sliding and swimming down a turquoise river gorge to Kawasan Falls. Lunch, snorkelling and canyoneering gear, entry fees and hotel transfers are included. This is a regular day trip rather than a private tour, so the vehicle and guide may be shared with other travellers. It suits active travellers who are comfortable in water.

Full Description

Moalboal: Snorkelling with the Sardine Run

Moalboal lies on the south-west coast of Cebu, facing the Tañon Strait, about three hours by road from Cebu City. Its claim to fame is the sardine run at Panagsama Beach: a shoal of sardines so large it looks like a moving silver wall, living year-round a short swim from the shore. Divers travel from all over the world to see it, but snorkellers can enjoy it just as well from the surface.

Your local guide briefs you on the beach, hands out the mask and life jacket and swims with you to the edge of the reef, where the shoal usually gathers. Fins are not included, so bring your own if you prefer them. Expect around an hour in the water. Is the Moalboal sardine run worth it? For most travellers it is the most surprising wildlife moment of their Cebu trip.

Sea Turtles and the Moalboal Reef

Beyond the shoal, the reef wall drops into deep blue water, covered in soft corals, sponges and reef fish. Green sea turtles are regularly seen here, feeding on sea grass or rising slowly to breathe, and offshore you can see the small rocky outline of Pescador Island, a well-known marine reserve.

Turtles are wild animals, so they are watched calmly from a distance, never touched or followed, and no sighting is guaranteed. Please use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid standing on corals. Mornings usually bring the calmest sea at Moalboal, which is one reason this day trip leaves Cebu so early. Your guide knows where the turtles usually rest and points them out without crowding them.

Kawasan Canyoneering Route

After the snorkelling, a short drive takes you to the hills of Alegria, where the canyoneering begins along a river that runs through a narrow limestone gorge. With helmet, life jacket and trekking shoes provided, you follow your guide downstream, swimming through pools of startling turquoise, sliding down smooth rock chutes and jumping from ledges of different heights. Every big jump has an alternative route for those who prefer to climb down.

The route takes around three to four hours at a steady pace. Many people search for how to get to Kawasan canyoneering from Cebu City: it is a long trip by public bus, while this day trip includes transport there and back, with lunch served during the day so you can concentrate on the adventure.

Kawasan Falls in Badian

The canyon ends at Kawasan Falls in Badian, a multi-tiered waterfall whose main cascade drops into a wide turquoise pool framed by jungle. After hours of jumping and swimming, it is the perfect place to relax, swim near the falls and take photos before heading back. Most travellers spend around 30 to 45 minutes here.

The best time to visit Kawasan Falls is during the dry season from December to May, when the water is clearest and the river is gentle. During the rainy months, roughly June to November, heavy rain can make the water murky and canyoneering may be suspended for safety; if that happens we will contact you about alternatives or a new date.
