Full Description

Scuba Diving in Boracay for Beginners

Boracay is one of the easiest places in the Philippines to take your first breaths underwater. The water is warm all year, often between 27 and 30 °C, and visibility is usually good in the dry season. Around the island, sheltered sandy slopes and coral gardens lie at shallow depths that suit new divers perfectly, so beginners can enjoy real reef life without going deep.

Many travellers ask whether trying scuba diving in Boracay is worth it during a beach holiday. For most guests the answer is yes: in about three hours you learn the basics, feel what weightless floating is like and see coral and fish at eye level. If you love it, the experience is a natural first step towards a full diving course later.

The Briefing and Shallow-Water Practice

Your experience begins with a relaxed theory session at the dive centre near Station 1. The instructor explains how the equipment works, how to breathe slowly through the regulator, how to equalise your ears and how to use simple hand signals. You also complete a short medical questionnaire, as is standard for all scuba activities.

Next comes the confined-water session in calm, shallow water where you can stand up at any time. Here you practise breathing underwater, clearing a little water from your mask and recovering your regulator, at your own pace. Only when you feel comfortable and the instructor is happy with your skills do you move on to the open-water dive.

Your Open-Water Dive on a Boracay Reef

A boat takes your small group from White Beach to a nearby reef chosen for the day's sea conditions. Beginner dives are typically around 6 metres deep and never deeper than 12 metres. With your instructor beside you, you descend slowly along the slope and glide over coral heads, sandy patches and schools of reef fish, often spotting colourful wrasses, butterflyfish and sometimes a turtle.

The instructor controls the depth and pace and keeps a close eye on your air. Photos and videos of your dive are included, so you can relive the moment back on land. Please do not touch coral or animals; good buoyancy and calm movements protect the reef, and your instructor will show you how to stay neutral and relaxed.

Station 1, White Beach and Planning Your Dive

The meeting point is at Station 1 on White Beach, the widest and calmest part of Boracay's famous west coast. Start times are 09:00 or 13:00. Mornings usually offer the calmest water, while afternoons can be warmer and brighter. The best time to dive in Boracay is the dry season from December to May; from June to October the southwest monsoon can make the west coast rough, and dives may be moved to sheltered sites or rescheduled.

How to get to Boracay? Fly to Caticlan airport, a few minutes from Caticlan jetty, and cross by boat in about 15 minutes to Cagban port; or fly to Kalibo International Airport, about one and a half to two hours by road plus the boat. Plan your dive at least a day before your flight home, as dive safety guidelines recommend waiting before flying.
