4.8 (597 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This El Nido to Coron expedition turns the journey between Palawan's two most famous destinations into a three-day adventure by boat. Full Description
Leaving El Nido from San Fernando port
The expedition begins with a pre-departure briefing in El Nido town, where the crew explains the route, safety rules and what to pack. You then transfer to San Fernando port on the northern side of El Nido, away from the busy town beach, and board the boat that will be your home on the water for three days.
Leaving El Nido by sea lets you see the northern coast of Palawan as few visitors do: forested headlands, fishing villages and limestone islands thinning out as you head into open water. The first day sets the rhythm of the trip, with long boat stretches broken by swims and snorkelling stops chosen by the crew according to the weather and the sea.
The Linapacan islands
Between El Nido and Coron lies the island group of Linapacan, a quiet municipality of small islands and fishing communities. Its waters are known for being exceptionally clear, with white-sand coves and reefs that see only a handful of boats. This is the heart of the expedition and the reason travellers choose the slow route over the ferry.
Days here are simple: swim, snorkel over coral gardens, walk an empty beach, and watch local fishermen at work. The exact stops change with wind and tide, which is part of the off-grid character of the trip. The Linapacan environmental fee is paid locally, like the other municipal fees along the route.
Island camps and native huts
Both nights are spent at island camps in simple native huts built from bamboo and local materials. This is not hotel comfort: expect basic beds and simple facilities, with limited electricity and usually no phone signal or internet. In return you get quiet beaches, sunsets over the sea and nights lit by stars.
Meals are cooked by the on-board chef: typically grilled fish and seafood, rice, vegetables and tropical fruit, with snacks and purified drinking water through the day. Halal-certified food is not available on remote islands, so tell us your dietary needs when booking; seafood and vegetarian meals are easy to arrange. Evenings are relaxed, with dinner by the beach and time to talk with the crew about island life.
Culion and the waters of the Calamian islands
On the way north the route crosses the waters of Culion, one of the larger islands of the Calamian group that also includes Busuanga and Coron. Culion town has a coral-stone fort church from the 1700s overlooking the bay, and its islands are surrounded by mangroves, quiet channels and reefs. The Calamian islands are a world of their own, far from roads and crowds.
This last stretch brings you closer to the dramatic limestone scenery that Coron is famous for. Snorkelling stops continue as conditions allow, and the crew times the final crossing to reach Coron town in daylight. The Culion and Coron environmental fees are paid locally. Watch for flying fish and, on lucky days, dolphins riding the bow wave, always seen from the boat and never chased.
Arriving in Coron town
The expedition ends in Coron town on Busuanga Island, the base for the island hopping trips to Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon and Barracuda Lake. Many travellers book a Coron tour for the next day, and our team can arrange it so your Palawan trip flows from one adventure to the next.
From Coron you can fly onwards from Busuanga airport (USU), about thirty to forty minutes from town, with flights of about one hour to Manila. Plan at least one night in Coron after the expedition, as arrival time depends on the sea. On your first evening, the steps up Mount Tapyas give a fine sunset view over the bay you have just crossed.
Is the El Nido to Coron expedition worth it, and best time to go
Is the El Nido to Coron expedition worth it? If you want to see remote Palawan, sleep on islands without crowds and slow down for a few days, it is one of the most memorable ways to travel in the Philippines. If you need air conditioning, wifi and private bathrooms, the fast ferry between El Nido and Coron, about four hours, is the better choice.
The best time for the expedition is the dry season from December to May, with the calmest seas from about March to May. From June to November typhoons and strong winds can delay or cancel departures, and the coast guard has the final word. Keep your onward plans flexible by a day.
