Full Description
Palau Guell, Gaudi's early masterpiece
Palau Guell was built between 1886 and 1890 for the industrialist Eusebi Guell, Gaudi's most important patron, and it was one of the first works that made the young architect famous. It stands on Carrer Nou de la Rambla, in the El Raval district, a short walk from La Rambla.
Palau Guell tickets open a house that combines a solemn, stone facade with unexpectedly rich interiors. It is inscribed by UNESCO as one of the Works of Antoni Gaudi and is often described as a hidden gem compared with busier sites such as the Sagrada Familia.
The central hall and the interior
The heart of the palace is the central hall, a tall space that rises through the building and ends in a parabolic dome. Small round openings in the dome let light in like stars, creating a beautiful effect in the daytime. Around the hall are richly decorated rooms with carved wood, stained glass and metalwork.
Also note the wrought-iron entrance gates, with their curved and intertwined lines, and the basement stables, where brick columns spread like mushrooms. The audio guide explains how Gaudi solved the challenge of building a grand house on a narrow plot.
The rooftop and its chimneys
The rooftop is a highlight for many visitors. About twenty chimneys and ventilation towers are covered in broken ceramic, glass and stone, and each has its own shape and colour. From up here you also get views over El Raval and the old town.
The rooftop is a good preview of the playful style Gaudi used later in Casa Batllo and Casa Mila. Access to the rooftop and the south courtyard is included with your ticket. Take care on the uneven surfaces and stairs, and allow a few minutes to look at each chimney, because the patterns are different every time.
Planning your visit and getting there
The Palau Guell is close to the Liceu and Drassanes metro stations and a short walk from Placa Reial. Allow about an hour, and a little more if you like to listen to the whole audio guide. The audio guide can be downloaded or picked up as a physical device, depending on availability.
Not allowed inside are food and drinks, selfie sticks, flash photography and tripods. Opening hours change by season and on holidays, so check the details when you choose your date. Late afternoon is often quieter than midday, and the light through the dome is at its most atmospheric then.
