Full Description

Teide National Park

Teide National Park covers the high centre of Tenerife and is the most visited national park in Spain, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its heart is Las Cañadas, a vast volcanic crater about 16 kilometres across, where frozen rivers of black and red lava, pumice fields and strange rock towers create a landscape often compared to the moon or Mars.

On the way up, the coach climbs through Canary pine forests before the trees give way to open volcanic plains. The guide shares the story of the eruptions, the hardy plants that survive at this altitude and the observatories on the ridge. A Teide National Park tour by coach also helps protect the park, where parking areas are small and limited on purpose to reduce traffic.

Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain

Mount Teide rises to 3,718 metres above sea level, making it the highest mountain in Spain and the highest point of any island in the Atlantic. Measured from the ocean floor, it is one of the tallest volcanoes in the world. It is still considered active: the last eruption on Tenerife took place in 1909, and fumaroles near the summit release warm, sulphur-scented steam.

From below, the cone looks perfectly shaped, often capped with snow in winter and surrounded by the older Pico Viejo volcano. Is Mount Teide worth visiting? For most travellers it is the highlight of a holiday in Tenerife, combining dramatic scenery with the feeling of standing on a living volcano above the clouds.

The Teide cable car

The Teide cable car starts from the base station at about 2,356 metres and climbs some 1,200 metres in about eight minutes, carrying passengers in cabins with large windows. The ride offers changing views over the crater floor, the lava flows and, on clear days, the neighbouring islands. Your return ticket is included in the price, so you simply join the queue with your group.

At the top, the upper station sits at 3,555 metres. The air is thin and cool, so walk slowly and drink water. People with heart or breathing problems and pregnant women should not go up. In strong wind the cable car can close; in that case the tour continues on an alternative route in the national park and the cable car part of the ticket is refunded.

Viewpoint trails at the upper station

From the upper station, two short trails lead to viewpoints. One heads to the La Fortaleza viewpoint, looking north over the green valleys and the coast towards Puerto de la Cruz. The other leads to the Pico Viejo viewpoint, facing south and west over the great crater of the older volcano, with La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro often floating on the horizon.

These trails are open to all cable car passengers and are included with your free time, along with a digital audio guide that tells the geology and legends of Teide. The path to the summit crater is different: it requires a permit booked well in advance, which is not included. The best time to visit Mount Teide is from spring to autumn, as winter can bring snow, ice and road closures.
