Full Description
Ayutthaya, the Old Capital of Siam
Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siamese kingdom for 417 years and one of the largest cities in the world in the 17th century, trading with China, Persia, Japan and Europe. In 1767 it was destroyed by the Burmese army, and the capital later moved to Bangkok.
The ruins lie on an island formed by three rivers, about 80 kilometres north of Bangkok. Ayutthaya Historical Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991. A day trip to Ayutthaya from Bangkok takes about 1.5 hours each way by road and is one of the most rewarding excursions in Thailand.
Wat Mahathat and the Buddha Head in the Tree
Built in the 14th century, Wat Mahathat was once the religious heart of the city and housed relics of the Buddha. Today its ruined prangs and headless statues show the scale of the destruction of 1767.
Its most famous sight is a stone Buddha head entwined in the roots of a fig tree, one of the most photographed images in Thailand. When taking photos, crouch or kneel so that you are not standing higher than the head, out of respect. It is a highlight of any Ayutthaya temples tour. Arrive early to photograph it before the crowds.
Royal Temples of Ayutthaya
The tour usually includes several of the park's great temples, such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet with its three bell-shaped chedis that held royal ashes, Wat Chaiwatthanaram with its Khmer-style central prang beside the river, or the huge Reclining Buddha of Wat Lokayasutharam.
The exact choice depends on timing and conditions on the day, and your guide explains the architecture and the stories of the kings who built each one. Is Ayutthaya worth visiting? For anyone interested in Thai history, it is essential: nowhere else shows the grandeur of old Siam so clearly.
Practical Tips for Visiting Ayutthaya
The best time to visit Ayutthaya is from November to February, when the weather is dry and cooler. The temples are spread out and there is little shade, so bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, as these remain sacred places. In the default option, a buffet lunch is included, served at a local restaurant, giving you a break in the middle of the day before the drive back to Bangkok. During the rainy season, from June to October, showers are usually short, so a small umbrella is enough. Near the park you may see elephants with their keepers; we recommend watching them rather than riding.
