Full Description
The hills and trails behind Hammamet
Most visitors only see Hammamet's long sandy beach, yet a few kilometres inland the landscape turns into rolling hills, dry riverbeds and small farms that belong to the Cap Bon region. This Hammamet quad tour follows dirt tracks and country lanes through that hinterland, climbing gently to viewpoints where the plain opens up towards the sea. The surface changes from packed earth to loose gravel and sandy stretches, enough to feel the thrill without being technical.
The instructor rides at the front and sets a steady pace, with the group following in single file. You stop several times for photos and a short rest, and the guide explains what grows on the slopes and how the villages live from the land. The 1.5 hours of riding pass quickly, and the views over the green hills are the part most riders remember.
Olive groves, tabouna bread and mint tea
Olive trees have shaped the Tunisian countryside since antiquity, and Tunisia remains one of the largest olive oil producers in the world. Along the trails you ride between neat rows of silver-green trees, some of them very old, which are harvested by hand in late autumn and winter. The groves give the ride its character and a pleasant scent after rain.
At the break, you taste tabouna bread, the round loaf baked against the walls of a traditional clay oven, served warm with local extra virgin olive oil, together with a glass of sweet mint tea. It is a simple countryside snack and a real taste of rural Tunisia, and a good moment to talk with your instructor and the other riders before the return leg.
Coastal views and Yasmine Hammamet
From the higher points of the route you look back over the plain to the coastline, where the white hotels of Hammamet stretch for kilometres along the sand. To the south lies Yasmine Hammamet, the modern resort quarter with its marina, wide beach and promenade, built from the late 1990s onwards. On clear days the sea glows deep blue behind the olive trees.
Pickup is included from Hammamet, Yasmine Hammamet, Mrezga, Hammamet Nord, Hammamet Sud and Nabeul, so you do not need to work out how to get to the starting point. After the ride, our driver takes you back to your hotel in time for lunch by the pool or an afternoon on the beach, which makes this one of the easiest things to do in Hammamet on a short stay.
Hammamet medina and kasbah
Hammamet grew around a small walled medina on the seafront, whose fortress overlooks the beach and the fishing harbour. The ramparts, whitewashed lanes and blue doors are compact enough to explore in an hour, and from the top of the kasbah walls there is a wide view along the shore. Inside the old town you find small craft shops, a traditional hammam and cafés serving mint tea with pine nuts.
Combine the morning quad ride with a late-afternoon visit to the medina, when the light softens and the evening breeze comes in from the sea. Many travellers ask whether Hammamet is worth visiting beyond its beaches; the old town and the green hinterland you see on this ride are the best answer.
Nabeul and the best time to ride
Just north of Hammamet, Nabeul is the craft capital of the Cap Bon, known for its colourful pottery, ceramic tiles and the chilli paste harissa, and for its large weekly market. Guests staying in Nabeul are collected from their hotel too, and the drive to the trails is short.
The best time to visit Hammamet for quad biking is spring and autumn, when the fields are green and temperatures are mild. In summer the morning departure keeps you away from the strongest heat, and the premium sunset departure offers softer light and cooler air. In winter the trails can be muddy after rain, which adds to the fun but calls for clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
