Full Description
The Palais Garnier, Paris Opera House
The Palais Garnier is the opera house that Napoleon III commissioned and the architect Charles Garnier designed; it opened in 1875 and remains one of the most extravagant buildings of Second Empire Paris. If you are wondering whether the Palais Garnier is worth visiting, the answer is yes even if you never see a performance, because the interiors are as famous as the shows.
It stands on the Place de l'Opéra in the 9th arrondissement, and the entrance for visitors is clearly signed. Palais Garnier tickets are for a timed entry slot, so arrive a few minutes early to pass security. Opening hours change with the season and with rehearsals and events, so check the slot on your ticket.
The grand staircase and the Grand Foyer
The grand staircase is the heart of any Palais Garnier visit: a broad double flight of white and coloured marble under a painted ceiling, designed so that opera-goers could see and be seen. Statues, columns and lamp-bearing figures line the balustrades, and it is the place where most visitors stop to take photographs.
Upstairs, the Grand Foyer is a long gallery covered in gold, mosaics and painted ceilings, with tall windows that open onto the Avenue de l'Opéra. Nearby you pass the avant-foyer and the salons dedicated to the Moon and the Sun. Allow time to look up, because much of the richest decoration is overhead.
The Library-Museum of the Opera and the Rotonde du Glacier
The Library-Museum of the Opera, run in association with the French national library, shows scale models of stage sets, costumes, paintings and prints that trace the history of opera and ballet in Paris. It is a quieter part of the building and a good place to slow down and understand how the theatre works behind the scenes.
The Rotonde du Glacier, with its tapestries and rich ornament, was designed as a refreshment room for the audience and gives a lovely view of the building's grand scale. During the run of the temporary exhibition, from 27 October 2026 to 20 February 2027, your ticket also gives access to that show.
The auditorium, the Phantom of the Opera and the practical visit
The auditorium is the horseshoe-shaped hall with red velvet seats and a golden ceiling, where a huge chandelier hangs beneath a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall in 1964. It is visible when it is free from rehearsals and performances, so it cannot be guaranteed on every visit day. The building also inspired Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, and the underground water beneath the stage is part of its legend.
Most visitors take about an hour and a half with a self-guided ticket. The audio guide is not included, but you can rent one at the venue. Wear comfortable shoes, expect a security check and avoid bringing large bags. The nearest metro station is Opéra, on lines 3, 7 and 8, so it is easy to combine with a walk to the Tuileries or the department stores.
