Full Description

Almyrida, a Calm Bay on the Apokoronas Coast

Your dive takes place at Almyrida, a small seaside village east of Chania where the coast of Apokoronas meets the wide mouth of Souda Bay. Once a quiet fishing harbour, it now has a relaxed beach front, a few tavernas and the remains of an early Christian basilica with mosaic floors near the shore. The bay is protected from much of the swell, which is why it is a favourite place for first dives in western Crete.

How to get to Almyrida from Chania? The drive along the national road and the coast takes around 30 to 40 minutes, and with this experience it is done for you: we pick you up from your hotel in Chania and bring you back afterwards. On the way you pass the green hills of Apokoronas with the White Mountains rising behind them, one of the most scenic corners of the Chania region.

Your First Lesson: Theory and Equipment

Before going into the sea, your instructor gives a theory lesson of about 25 minutes at the dive centre. You learn how the equipment works, how to breathe calmly through the regulator, how to equalise the pressure in your ears and the simple hand signals used underwater. There is time for questions, and nobody is rushed.

You then put on your wetsuit, mask, fins, weight belt and buoyancy jacket with the help of the team, and practise the basic skills in shallow water where you can stand. Only when you feel comfortable does the dive continue deeper. With one instructor for every two adults, and one instructor for every child, you have close attention from start to finish, which makes the whole Chania scuba diving experience calm and reassuring.

The Dive: Discovering the Sea of Crete

Holding your instructor's hand if you wish, you glide slowly down to a maximum depth of about 8 metres. The seabed here mixes sand, rocks and meadows of seagrass, home to sea bream, wrasse, damselfish, starfish, sea urchins and sometimes an octopus peeking out of a crevice. Visibility in summer is often excellent, and the light filtering down from the surface makes the colours glow.

The time underwater is unhurried, and your instructor watches your air, depth and comfort throughout. While you explore, photos and a short video are taken, so you can enjoy the moment rather than worry about a camera. Is a beginner dive in Crete worth it? For many guests it becomes the highlight of their holiday and the start of a new hobby.

Safety, Health and the Best Time to Dive

Everyone fills in a short health questionnaire before diving. Some conditions, such as asthma, heart problems or other serious medical issues, may prevent you from taking part, so please check with your doctor if you are unsure. Children must be at least eight years old and accompanied by an adult, and the experience is not suitable during pregnancy. Leave enough time between diving and flying: avoid booking a flight within 48 hours of your dive.

The best time to dive in Chania is from June to October, when the sea is warmest and visibility is at its best; in May the water is fresher but still pleasant in a wetsuit. Morning sessions usually offer the calmest water, while afternoon sessions suit late risers. If the weather is poor, you are offered another date or a full refund.
