Full Description
The Great Rift Valley Viewpoint
About an hour after leaving Nairobi the road reaches the edge of the Great Rift Valley, the vast trench that splits East Africa from the Red Sea to Mozambique. We stop at the escarpment viewpoint above Mai Mahiu, where the ground drops away to the valley floor and the volcanic cone of Mount Longonot rises ahead, with Lake Naivasha glinting to the north on a clear morning. Small curio stalls line the viewpoint.
The stop takes about fifteen minutes before the road winds down the escarpment and across the valley floor. From here it is roughly another hour to Naivasha town and the Elsa gate of Hell's Gate, which is how to get to Hell's Gate from Nairobi in about two hours in total. The whole route is on tarmac, so the day is far less tiring than a safari to the Mara.
Hell's Gate National Park
Hell's Gate National Park covers about 68 square kilometres south of Lake Naivasha and is named for the narrow break in the cliffs through which a prehistoric lake once drained. Towering red walls, the lone basalt column of Fischer's Tower near the entrance and the Central Tower further in give the park a landscape unlike anywhere else in Kenya, and because there are no lions or elephants here, it is one of the few national parks where visitors may leave the vehicle and explore on a bicycle or on foot.
Your private guide leads your party along the main valley track past grazing zebras, Maasai giraffes, elands, hartebeest, warthogs and buffalo, with rock hyraxes and augur buzzards on the cliffs. The ride from the gate to the gorge is about eight kilometres on a mostly flat dirt road, with bicycle hire included; anyone who prefers can walk a shorter stretch or ride in the vehicle. The park entry fee is paid at the gate.
The Ol Njorowa Gorge and Geothermal Springs
At the end of the valley track the land splits into the Ol Njorowa gorge, a narrow canyon of smooth red rock carved by water, where your guide leads you down on foot through passages sometimes only a few metres wide. Hot springs seep from the walls, steam rises from vents and the rock is warm to touch, a reminder that this is one of the most geothermally active places in the Rift Valley; the Olkaria power plants next to the park harvest the same heat.
The gorge walk takes about an hour to ninety minutes and involves some scrambling, so closed shoes with grip are essential. After heavy rain the gorge can be closed for safety because of flash floods, in which case your guide uses the time for the upper viewpoints and the cliffs instead. Lunch is at your own expense, either packed from Nairobi or bought in Naivasha.
Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley lakes at about 1,884 metres and, unusually, freshwater, which is why its shores are green with papyrus and yellow-barked acacias and its waters hold a large hippo population. The lake is also a birdwatcher's paradise, with fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers and herons easy to see from a boat. In the afternoon we drive to the lakeshore, where an optional boat ride of about an hour, paid locally, takes you out among the hippo pods and under the fish eagles' perches.
Boats can also land on Crescent Island, a private sanctuary without predators where giraffes, zebras, waterbucks and wildebeest graze beside walkers; ask your guide if time allows. Boat rides are optional and weather-dependent, and keeping a respectful distance from hippos is part of every skipper's briefing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
The guide inside Hell's Gate is private to your party. The transfer from Nairobi is by air-conditioned vehicle; tell us your group size when booking and our team will confirm the vehicle arrangement for your date on WhatsApp.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes within the day: you can cycle less and walk more, skip the gorge, spend longer on the lake or leave out the boat ride. The 07:00 start keeps the park cool for cycling.
Do we have to cycle?
No. Bicycle hire is included and most guests enjoy the flat ride, but you can walk part of the track or follow in the vehicle, and the gorge section is on foot for everyone.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person, with a reduced rate for children aged three to eleven. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off at your hotel, apartment or residence in Nairobi are included.
What is included?
Transport by air-conditioned vehicle, the Rift Valley viewpoint stop, a private guide inside Hell's Gate, bicycle hire, the drive to Lake Naivasha and bottled water. Not included: the park entrance fee, the optional boat ride, food and drinks, and tips.
How long is the tour?
About ten hours, from 07:00 to around 17:00–18:00, with roughly two hours of driving each way.
Is it suitable for children and reduced mobility?
Children from three years are welcome; small ones can ride in the vehicle and children's bicycles are limited, so tell us ages in advance. The gorge involves scrambling on rock and is not suitable for wheelchairs, but the park track, the viewpoints and the boat can be enjoyed with assistance; contact us to plan.
What should I bring?
Passport, bank card for the park fee, cash for the boat, packed lunch and snacks, closed shoes, hat, sunscreen, a rain jacket in the wet season, camera and binoculars.
When is the best time to visit Hell's Gate?
The dry months of January to March and June to October are best for cycling and for the gorge; mornings are cooler, which is why we start early. In April–May and November rain can close the gorge.
Is Hell's Gate worth visiting if we are also going on safari?
Yes, because it offers something safaris do not: being on the ground, on a bicycle, with zebras and giraffes beside you and no vehicle around you. Combined with the hippos of Lake Naivasha, it is one of the best day trips from Nairobi.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms your pickup time on WhatsApp within minutes.
