Full Description

Mount Longonot National Park

Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano rising from the floor of the Great Rift Valley about 60 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, its summit reaching 2,776 metres and its crater, about two kilometres across, filled with a forest that almost nobody enters. The mountain last erupted in the 1860s and steam still escapes from fissures on the crater walls. It is protected as Mount Longonot National Park, a small park whose attraction is the mountain itself, and how to get to Mount Longonot from Nairobi is a drive of about an hour and a half via the escarpment road and the Naivasha highway.

Park entry fees are paid at the gate and are not included in the tour; our guide handles the registration. Mount Longonot opening hours run from early morning to late afternoon, and we arrive at the gate around 07:30 to climb in the cool of the day.

The climb to the crater rim

The trail starts at the gate at about 2,150 metres and rises steadily across open grassland and scrub, with the first half a gentle walk and the second a steeper, dusty climb on a path cut into the volcanic ash. Most hikers reach the rim in one and a half to two hours; the final section is the hardest, with loose ground where poles help. Zebra, giraffe, buffalo and hartebeest are sometimes seen on the lower slopes, so keep your camera ready and stay with your guide.

At the rim the reward is sudden: the crater opens below you, a perfect bowl of forest, while behind you the Rift Valley stretches to Lake Naivasha, the cliffs of Hell's Gate and the long ridge of Mount Suswa. This is where many families choose to rest and turn back; the private tour lets you decide.

The crater-rim loop and the summit

The loop around the crater is about 7.2 kilometres and takes two to three hours, with several steep ups and downs along a narrow ridge path. The highest point, Kilele Ngamia, lies on the far side and is the true summit of Mount Longonot; from there the view takes in the whole lake, the flower farms on its shore and the Aberdare mountains on a clear day. Walking the full circle is the classic Mount Longonot hike and the reason the mountain is one of the most popular climbs near Nairobi.

Is Mount Longonot worth visiting if you are not a regular hiker? Yes, with the understanding that it is a real climb at altitude. The descent takes about an hour. The best time to visit Mount Longonot is the dry season, June to October and January to February, starting early to avoid the midday sun; after rain the ash path is slippery.

Lake Naivasha and the optional boat ride

Lake Naivasha lies just below the mountain, a freshwater lake fringed with papyrus and yellow fever trees where hippos spend the day in the shallows and African fish eagles call from the treetops. After the hike we drive about twenty minutes to the lakeshore, where an optional boat ride of about an hour is paid on the spot: the boatman takes you close to the hippo pods at a safe distance and calls the fish eagles down to snatch a fish from the water, a famous photograph of Kenya.

Lunch is not included, and we are happy to drive you to a lakeside restaurant before the boat. From Naivasha the road back to Nairobi climbs the escarpment with a last view over the valley, arriving in the late afternoon after a full day.
