It is a long day of about thirteen hours in a small group with an English-speaking driver-guide.

Full Description

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara National Reserve in Narok County is Kenya's most famous wildlife area, about 270 kilometres from Nairobi, and the northern continuation of the Serengeti plains. Roughly 1,500 square kilometres of open grassland dotted with acacia trees and cut by the Mara and Talek rivers support large lion prides, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, topi, elands, hyenas and jackals, with black rhino present but rarely seen. Because the country is so open, a single long game drive can produce more than many parks give in days.

On a Masai Mara day trip from Nairobi you spend roughly four to five hours inside the reserve, entering through the Sekenani gate and working the eastern plains and river thickets where our driver-guide knows the resident prides. Sightings are never guaranteed, and midday is quieter than dawn, but elephants, giraffes, buffalo and the great herds are active all day.

The Great Rift Valley Escarpment at Dawn

Leaving Nairobi at 04:00 means you reach the edge of the Great Rift Valley around sunrise. The road drops off the escarpment above Mai Mahiu with the valley floor, Mount Longonot and the plains towards Lake Naivasha opening below you, and at this hour the light on the valley is the best of the day. We stop briefly at the viewpoint for photographs and a stretch before descending.

The route then runs west through the farmland of the valley and on to Narok, the main Maasai town, where there is a rest stop for washrooms and breakfast or coffee bought locally. Beyond Narok the tarmac ends and the final stretch to the gate is a rough murram road, which is where the 4x4 safari vehicle makes the difference; expect dust in the dry season and mud after rain.

The Big Cats and the Great Herds

The Mara's reputation rests on its big cats. Lions are the easiest to find, often resting in the shade of a croton thicket or on a rise overlooking the plains; cheetahs use termite mounds as lookouts in the open grass; leopards are the prize, usually along the river lines. From about July to October the plains fill with the migration, more than a million wildebeest with zebras and gazelles arriving from the Serengeti, and river crossings happen at the Mara River, though never to order.

Outside migration season the resident wildlife is still abundant, and the dry months of January to March give short grass and easy viewing. The best time to visit the Masai Mara for a day trip is the dry season, when the roads are fastest and the animals gather near water; after heavy rain the tracks slow the day down.

Maasai Village at the Reserve Edge

The reserve is surrounded by Maasai community land, and before leaving you can choose to visit a village beside the gate. The visit, paid locally and entirely optional, takes about forty-five minutes: the warriors perform the jumping dance, the women sing and show the mud-and-dung houses they build inside the thorn fence, and there is a demonstration of fire-making and a small market of beadwork.

It is a friendly, easy stop and a good way for children to meet the people whose cattle share the land with the wildlife. If the group prefers to use the time for more game driving, the driver-guide can skip it. Either way the vehicle leaves the Mara by about 16:00 to make the long drive back to Nairobi, arriving at your hotel around 20:00 or later.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a small-group tour in a shared 4x4 safari vehicle with up to fifteen guests. If you would like a vehicle for your party only, contact our team and we will advise on a private arrangement for your date.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The departure and return times are fixed by the distance. Inside the reserve the driver-guide follows the sightings, and the Maasai village stop is optional for the group.

Is one day in the Masai Mara enough?

You get about four to five hours of game driving, which is enough to see the main species and the migration herds in season. For the river crossings and dawn drives, our three-day safaris on this site are the better choice.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person, with a reduced rate for children aged three to seventeen. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, pickup and drop-off at your hotel or apartment within the Nairobi pickup area are included.

What is included?

Transport in a 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof, an English-speaking driver-guide, the game drive in the Masai Mara and bottled water. Not included: the reserve entrance fee, the Maasai village fee, lunch and snacks, and tips.

How long is the tour?

About thirteen hours, from a 04:00 pickup to a return around 20:00, with four to five hours inside the reserve.

Is it suitable for children and reduced mobility?

Children from three years are welcome, but the long day is tiring for young ones. The vehicle has a high step and the roads are rough, so guests with back problems or limited mobility should consider a multi-day safari instead.

What should I bring?

Passport, bank card and cash, packed lunch and snacks, water, a warm layer, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera with zoom lens, binoculars and a neck pillow.

When is the best time of year?

July to October for the migration, January to March for dry roads and short grass. The long rains in April–May can make the road after Narok slow and muddy.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms your pickup time on WhatsApp within minutes.
