Full Description

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara is the northern tip of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, about 270 kilometres south-west of Nairobi in Narok County, and the most rewarding place in Kenya for a short safari. Its roughly 1,500 square kilometres of open savannah, thorn-tree thickets and seasonal streams hold big prides of lions, cheetahs on the termite mounds, leopards along the Talek and Mara rivers, elephant families, buffalo herds, giraffes, topi, elands, hyenas and the occasional black rhino. Because the land is open, animals are easier to find here than in most parks.

A Masai Mara 3 day safari gives three separate game drives: a short evening drive on arrival, a full day with a picnic lunch, and the early-morning light before you leave. Our driver-guides work the reserve daily and share sightings by radio. Wildlife is wild and sightings are never guaranteed, but few guests leave without seeing lions.

The Mara River and the Migration

The Mara River is the lifeline of the reserve and the reason for its global fame. Between roughly July and October more than a million wildebeest, with zebras and gazelles, move north from the Serengeti and gather on its banks before plunging across, while crocodiles wait in the water; the crossings are unpredictable and no single day can promise one, but the herds themselves fill the plains for months. The river's resident hippos and big crocodiles can be watched from the banks all year.

Day two of this safari is built around reaching the river, which lies in the western part of the reserve, so the full-day format with a picnic lunch is essential rather than a luxury. If the best time to visit the Masai Mara for you is outside the migration, January to March offers dry tracks, short grass and plenty of predator action, while November's green season is quiet and photogenic.

From Nairobi across the Great Rift Valley

The journey west is part of the experience. Leaving Nairobi at 08:00, the road climbs through the highland farms and then drops over the edge of the Great Rift Valley, with a viewpoint stop above Mai Mahiu looking down to Mount Longonot and the valley floor. The route continues through Narok, the Maasai county town where the tarmac gives way to murram for the final stretch to the reserve gate, with cattle, goats and sometimes giraffes and zebras beside the road.

The drive takes five to six hours with rest stops, and the 4x4 jeep makes the rough final section far more comfortable than a standard van. Lunch on day one is served at the lodge on arrival, so the evening game drive starts rested. On day three the same road brings you back to Nairobi by late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic.

The Safari Lodge and Full Board

The default option on this page is the lodge version: two nights in a safari lodge near the reserve with a proper room, private bathroom, hot shower and wall sockets for charging, and all meals served at the lodge, with vegetarian and halal choices available if you tell us when booking. A picnic lunch is packed for the full day in the reserve. After the dusty tracks, a solid room and a hot shower make a real difference, especially for families and older travellers.

If you prefer a lower price point or a closer-to-nature feel, the other group options use a tented camp with private tents and bathrooms, or an upgraded tented camp; all follow the same programme and game drives. Drinking water is provided in the vehicle, and drinks at the lodge are paid directly.

Maasai Village Visit

The Maasai are the pastoral community whose land surrounds the reserve, and a visit to one of their villages is included in this option. You are welcomed with the warriors' jumping dance and the women's songs, then shown inside the enkang: the low houses built by the women from branches, mud and dung, the central cattle enclosure that explains the whole way of life, and a demonstration of making fire by friction. Beadwork and carvings made in the village are offered for sale.

The visit usually takes about forty-five minutes on the morning of day three or after a game drive, and your driver-guide helps with translation and questions. It is a respectful, friendly exchange that children enjoy, and it gives context to the red-robed herders you will see along every road in the Mara.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private safari?

The default lodge option and the tented options are small-group departures sharing a jeep with up to eight guests. The private option on this page gives your party its own 4x4 jeep and driver-guide with departure times from 07:30 to 14:00.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

On the group safari the programme is fixed and the driver-guide adapts each drive to the sightings. On the private jeep you choose the departure time and how long to stay out each day.

How many people are in the vehicle?

A maximum of eight guests, each with a window seat and standing room through the pop-up roof.

Is the price per person or per group?

Every option is priced per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for the lodge, tented-camp and private versions on your dates.

Are the park fees included?

No. The Masai Mara entrance fees for both days are paid on arrival at the gate, by card. Our team will tell you the current amount when confirming.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, from hotels in Nairobi city centre and Westlands close to the highway. Guests elsewhere meet us outside the City Market on Muindi Mbingu Street.

What is included?

The 4x4 safari jeep and English-speaking driver-guide, two nights in a safari lodge, full board from lunch on day one to breakfast on day three with a picnic lunch on day two, the evening and full-day game drives, drinking water in the vehicle and the Maasai village visit.

What is the difference between the lodge and the tented camp?

The lodge has solid rooms with private bathrooms; the tented camps have large tents with beds and private bathrooms, hot showers and sockets, closer to the sounds of the bush. The safari programme is identical.

Is it suitable for children or reduced mobility?

Families are welcome and children usually love the Mara, though the drives are long and there is no separate child rate on this option. The jeep has a high step and lodge paths are uneven; guests with reduced mobility should contact us first.

When is the best time to go?

July to October for the migration, January to March for dry weather and newborns, November to December for green scenery and quieter tracks. April and May are the long rains.

What should I bring?

Passport, bank card for the park fees, a warm layer, sun protection, insect repellent and malaria precautions, camera with zoom lens, binoculars, a power bank and some cash for tips and crafts.

How do I book and confirm?

Select your option and date in the booking panel and send the request. Our team confirms availability and your pickup on WhatsApp within minutes and remains reachable throughout the safari.
