Full Description
The Kilim mangrove route to the Andaman Sea
The tour starts at Ayer Hangat in the northeast of Langkawi and follows the Kilim River into the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, part of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark. Near the start you pass the Kilim Karst sign, a favourite photo spot, before the boat enters a world of tidal channels, mangrove roots and cliffs of grey limestone draped in greenery.
Along Monkey River, long-tailed macaques often sit on the roots at the water's edge, and the skipper slows down so you can watch them. Further on the river opens towards the Andaman Sea, with views of islets and, on clear days, the hills of southern Thailand. This Langkawi mangrove tour with snorkelling suits those who want both nature and a swim in a single half-day.
The Bat Cave (Gua Kelawar)
The Bat Cave, or Gua Kelawar, is a limestone cave set in the mangrove forest and reached by a wooden boardwalk from the river. Inside, colonies of bats rest during the day, hanging from the ceiling above stalactites and flowstone formations shaped over thousands of years. The cave is dim and cool, and the visit takes about 20 to 30 minutes on a flat path.
Along the boardwalk look down at the mud for mudskippers and fiddler crabs, and up at the mangrove canopy for kingfishers. Please keep voices low and avoid flash photography inside so the bats are not disturbed. Entry to the cave is a small fee paid on the spot, not included in the tour.
The floating fish farm
Kilim's floating fish farms are platforms built on rafts in the sheltered river, where local families raise fish in net cages. Visitors can see groupers, snappers, stingrays gliding through the water, horseshoe crabs, an ancient species, and archerfish that shoot jets of water to knock insects off leaves.
The stop is a short, fun break for children and adults alike, and a chance to learn how fishing communities in the geopark make a living from the river. Staff on the platform explain the different species, and you may be able to touch some of the animals under supervision. Watch your step on the wet wooden planks. It is also a good spot for close-up photos of the fish.
Eagles, Crocodile Cave, Gorilla Hill and Shoe Island
Back on the river the boat pauses beneath the cliffs where Brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles circle overhead. Langkawi's name is often linked to the Malay word for eagle, and these birds are the island's symbol. Sightings are frequent but not guaranteed, as they are wild animals.
The cruise passes Crocodile Cave, a low sea cave at the river mouth that only small boats can enter at low tide, and the rock face of Gorilla Hill, whose profile resembles a gorilla's head. Out at sea you see Shoe Island, a small islet whose shape gives it its name. The skipper-guide shares the stories behind each formation and the best angles for photos.
Snorkelling at Dangli Island
After the mangroves the boat heads to Dangli Island, a small island off the north coast with a sandy beach and clear, shallow water. Snorkelling gear is provided, and you can swim among small reef fish around the rocks or simply relax on the sand. Visibility depends on the season and the tide, and is usually best in the dry months from November to April, the best time to visit Kilim for a swim.
Lunch is a local set meal, and halal food is the norm across Langkawi. How to get to Kilim: the meeting point at Ayer Hangat is about 25 minutes by road from Kuah and around 50 minutes from Pantai Cenang. The default option does not include transfers, but another option adds shared hotel transfers from Kuah, Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah.
