Full Description
ARTIS-Micropia, the world's only microbe museum
Micropia opened in Amsterdam in 2014 and is dedicated entirely to microbes, the bacteria, fungi, viruses and other organisms that are too small to see with the naked eye. Yet they shape our food, our health and the planet. If you are searching for Micropia tickets or the best science museum in Amsterdam, this compact museum is a distinctive choice.
What sets it apart is that many of the microbes are alive. Instead of only reading about them, you look through microscopes and watch tiny life forms move, grow and interact, with clear screens explaining what you see.
What you will see: microscopes, microbe stories and your own body
The exhibition is arranged from the tiniest life forms upwards, showing how microbes live in soil, water, food and on people. Expect large-scale images, films, interactive stations and quirky moments, such as discovering how many microbes live on and inside the human body, and a kissing booth that reveals what passes between two people.
Plan around 60 to 90 minutes. The exhibits are simple enough for children but detailed enough for adults, and staff and clear labelling explain complex ideas without heavy jargon. It is an ideal rainy-day activity in Amsterdam.
Getting to Micropia and combining it with ARTIS Zoo and the Plantage
