Full Description
Pico do Arieiro summit
Pico do Arieiro rises 1,818 metres above the sea and is the third-highest peak of Madeira, but unlike the others you can reach its summit by road. A white radar dome crowns the top, and from the car park, stone paths lead to viewpoints on every side, looking over volcanic ridges of red, purple and black rock and deep green valleys carved by erosion.
The road from Funchal climbs through forests of eucalyptus and pine, past the Poiso pass, and in about an hour you are far above the city. It is much colder at the top than on the coast, often 10 degrees less, and on winter evenings the temperature can drop close to freezing, so warm clothes are essential. Is Pico do Arieiro worth visiting? At sunset, with the clouds below your feet, the answer is a clear yes.
Sunset above the sea of clouds
On many evenings a thick layer of cloud settles over the valleys and the coast, while the summit stays in clear air. From the viewpoints you look out over this white sea, with the peaks of Pico Ruivo and Pico das Torres rising like islands. As the sun sinks, the clouds and rock turn gold, orange and pink, and the colours change minute by minute.
The departure time changes during the year to match sunset, so check the current time in the booking panel. The best time for a Pico do Arieiro sunset is from late spring to early autumn, when evenings are milder, but winter skies are often crystal clear. Weather in the mountains is never guaranteed: some evenings the summit itself is in cloud, which is why the rescheduling flexibility of the default option is so useful.
The Stairway to Heaven viewpoint
The Stairway to Heaven is the nickname of a spectacular section of the PR1 trail, which runs from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak of Madeira. Just beyond the summit, the path follows a narrow ridge with stone steps and railings, dropping steeply on both sides, with views over the clouds that make it one of the most photographed places on the island.
On this tour the walk is optional and self-guided: you go at your own pace and return to the minibus at the time given by the host. Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes there and back, depending on your speed and the conditions. Access depends on weather, daylight and trail status, as sections of the PR1 are sometimes closed for maintenance or after storms. The full hike to Pico Ruivo is not part of this tour.
The mountains of central Madeira
Pico do Arieiro sits at the heart of Madeira's central massif, the remains of the volcanoes that built the island. From the top you can see how the land falls steeply to the north and south coasts, and on clear days you can spot Funchal, the Desertas islands and even Porto Santo on the horizon.
The area is part of the Madeira Natural Park, where rare plants grow and the Madeira petrel, a seabird found only here, nests on the high cliffs. Many visitors want a Pico do Arieiro sunset tour precisely because driving these narrow mountain roads after dark is tiring; with our transfer you can simply enjoy the view and relax on the way down.
