Hermanus
Plan Hermanus with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.
Stand on the cliff path above Walker Bay on a winter morning and watch the sea. A plume of spray, a dark back rolling through the swell, then a tail raised high before it slips under: a southern right whale, close enough to hear it breathe. Along the path people stop, point and fall silent, and from the old harbour the whale crier's kelp horn sounds to tell the town where the whales are today.

Hermanus Airport Transfers
View allHermanus at first sight
Hermanus is the whale capital of the southern coast, a seaside town about two hours from Cape Town where mountains drop into fynbos and the fynbos drops into the sea. From June to November the whales come to calve in the bay, and all year the cliff path, the beaches, the shark boats of Gansbaai and the southern tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas make it the natural first stop on a journey east from the Cape.
Why include Hermanus in your itinerary?
- Whales from the shore. Few places in the world let you watch whales from a clifftop path a few steps from your hotel, and Hermanus does so from June to November, with boats from the harbour for a closer, respectful look.
- The marine big five. From nearby Gansbaai, boats head for the islands of the bay where seals, penguins, dolphins, whales and sharks share the water, with cage diving for the adventurous and viewing from the deck for everyone else.
- Mountains, fynbos and the tip of Africa. Fernkloof's flower-rich trails rise straight above the town, the coast road passes a penguin colony, and Cape Agulhas, where two oceans officially meet, is an easy day trip.
Signature experiences in Hermanus
Whale Watching from the Cliff Path
The cliff path runs for about twelve kilometres along the shore of Walker Bay, from the new harbour past the old harbour and the town's rocky coves to Grotto Beach. In season, southern right whales rest and play just offshore, often within a stone's throw of the rocks, and benches at the viewpoints let you wait in comfort. Our guided day tours time the path for the calm morning hours, when the sea is glassy and the whales are easiest to spot.
Boat-Based Whale Watching
Licensed boats leave the new harbour in Hermanus and the harbour at Gansbaai for about two hours on Walker Bay, keeping a respectful distance while the whales approach the boat out of curiosity. Southern rights are the stars from June to November, with humpback and Bryde's whales also seen, as well as dolphins and seals. Sightings are never guaranteed, and trips depend on the sea, so we build a spare morning into your stay.
Gansbaai and the Marine Big Five
About forty minutes east, the fishing town of Gansbaai is the base for shark cage diving and for cruises to Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, where a large seal colony, African penguins, dolphins and sharks share the channel known as Shark Alley. Great white sightings vary from season to season, and bronze whaler sharks are often seen instead; the boat trip is memorable either way. We arrange the early transfer and the booking.
Cape Agulhas, the Southern Tip of Africa
About an hour and a half south-east, Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point of the continent and the official meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. A marker on the rocks, a historic lighthouse you can climb and a wild coast of shipwrecks and dunes make a satisfying day, with the fishing villages of Struisbaai and Arniston nearby. Our driver and guide make it an easy full-day excursion from Hermanus.
Fernkloof and the Penguins of Betty's Bay
Above the town, Fernkloof Nature Reserve protects mountain fynbos with trails for every level and views across the whole bay. West along the coast road, the penguin colony at Stony Point in Betty's Bay can be seen from boardwalks, with a botanical garden in the mountains behind it. The coastal road itself, clinging to the cliffs between the sea and the mountains, is one of the most scenic drives in the country and the finest way to arrive from Cape Town.
Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Hermanus
Town Centre and the Old Harbour
The historic heart of Hermanus gathers around the market square, the old harbour museum and the start of the cliff path, with hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and craft markets a few steps from the whale viewpoints. It is the best base in whale season, walkable by day and evening, and the Saturday market in the square is a local favourite.
Voëlklip and Grotto Beach
East of the centre, the quiet suburb of Voëlklip sits above the sheltered beaches of Voëlklip and Kammabaai and the long sands of Grotto Beach, a Blue Flag beach with calm swimming on summer days. Guesthouses here are peaceful and close to the eastern end of the cliff path, ideal for families and longer stays.
Onrus and Sandbaai
West of town on the way from Cape Town, Onrus and Sandbaai are relaxed residential villages with a lagoon, a small beach and tidal pools, and fewer visitors. They suit travellers who want a quieter night, with Hermanus centre ten minutes away for whales and dinner.
Gansbaai and De Kelders
About forty minutes east, De Kelders sits on cliffs above Walker Bay with caves, a coastal path and whales often closer to shore than anywhere else, while Gansbaai is the departure point for shark and island boats. A night here suits travellers focused on marine wildlife and early boat departures.
How long to stay in Hermanus and how to pair it
Recommended stay
We recommend two nights in Hermanus. One day for the cliff path and a boat-based whale trip, and one for Gansbaai's marine wildlife or Cape Agulhas. With a third night, add Fernkloof and the penguins at Betty's Bay or a slow day on Grotto Beach. Outside whale season, one night on the way along the coast is enough to enjoy the town and Gansbaai.
How to pair it
Hermanus pairs naturally with Cape Town, about two hours west, and most travellers arrive from there after three or four nights in the city. Eastwards, the coast continues through Cape Agulhas and the Overberg farmlands to Knysna and the Garden Route, about four and a half hours, and on to Gqeberha for Addo's elephants, making a ten-day drive from Cape Town. For a two-week journey, add Johannesburg and the Kruger region around Hazyview by air, or Durban and St Lucia.
Best time to visit Hermanus and the rhythm of the day
Best months
The best time to visit Hermanus is the whale season from June to November, with August to October the peak months when calves are in the bay and the spring flowers are out. The winter weather is cool with some rain and bright days in between. From December to March the town is warm, sunny and busy with beach holidays, with whales gone but the marine wildlife of Gansbaai still active. April and May are quiet and mild.
The daily rhythm
Hermanus mornings begin on the cliff path with the sea at its calmest, or on an early boat from the harbour. Lunch is in the square or by the old harbour, watching the bay. Afternoons suit Fernkloof, the beaches at Voëlklip or a drive along the coast, and the wind often rises later in the day. Evenings are quiet and early, with dinner near the harbour and the sound of the sea below the cliffs.
On-the-ground logistics in Hermanus
Arrival
Hermanus has no airport of its own. Cape Town International Airport is about two hours away by road, either inland on the N2 over the mountains or along the slower, spectacular coastal road through Gordon's Bay and Betty's Bay. From the Garden Route, Knysna is about four and a half hours and George airport about three and a half. We arrange private airport transfers from Cape Town, with our driver meeting you in the arrivals hall and the option of the scenic route with stops.
Getting around
The town centre, the old harbour and the cliff path are all on foot, and that is the way Hermanus is best enjoyed. For Gansbaai, Cape Agulhas and the coastal road a private car with driver arranged by our team is the comfortable choice, as there is no useful public transport. Early boat departures from Gansbaai are easiest with our pre-arranged transfer.
Local etiquette tip
Hermanus is a relaxed seaside town where casual dress is the norm and a warm jacket is essential in whale season. Keep to the cliff path and never climb down to the rocks for a closer look at a whale; the animals are protected and boats follow strict distance rules. Stay on trails in Fernkloof and leave the fynbos untouched. Tip about ten percent in restaurants. The town is calm, but keep valuables out of sight and use arranged transport late at night.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask most about Hermanus.
When is the best time to see whales in Hermanus?
Southern right whales arrive in Walker Bay around June and stay until about November, with August, September and October the peak months when mothers and calves rest close to shore. Humpbacks pass through in the same period. Sightings are never guaranteed, but in peak season whales are seen from the cliff path on most days.
How far is Hermanus from Cape Town?
Hermanus is about two hours from Cape Town and its airport by road, a little longer by the coastal road through Betty's Bay with its sea views and penguin colony. We arrange private transfers from Cape Town, with stops along the way if you wish, and private cars with driver onward to the Garden Route.
Where should first-time visitors stay in Hermanus?
In whale season, stay in the town centre near the old harbour, where the cliff path and the viewpoints are on your doorstep and restaurants are walkable. Families and summer visitors often prefer Voëlklip near Grotto Beach, and marine-wildlife enthusiasts sometimes choose De Kelders near Gansbaai. Our team can suggest a hotel and arrange your transfer.
Is shark cage diving safe and suitable for beginners?
Yes. Cage diving from Gansbaai needs no diving experience; you breathe at the surface inside a steel cage attached to the boat, with a wetsuit and briefing provided, and children usually need to be at least about ten years old. Those who prefer can watch from the deck. Great white sightings vary by season, and other shark species are often seen.
Can Hermanus be done as a day trip from Cape Town?
Yes, a long day from Cape Town covers the cliff path, lunch by the harbour and the coastal road, and we offer this as a guided day tour. In whale season, however, a night or two lets you add a boat trip, Gansbaai and Cape Agulhas without rushing, and gives a spare morning if the sea cancels a boat.
Is Hermanus safe for travellers?
Hermanus is a relaxed holiday town and generally considered safe for visitors, with the usual care: keep valuables out of sight, lock the car at viewpoints and use arranged transport late at night. Check your own government's travel advice before departure, and keep our WhatsApp line handy throughout your stay.
How many days do you need in Hermanus?
Two days is ideal in whale season: one for the cliff path and a boat trip, one for Gansbaai or Cape Agulhas. Three days allows Fernkloof, the penguins at Betty's Bay and a beach afternoon. Outside whale season, one night on the way along the coast is enough to enjoy the town.
What can I book in Hermanus with Haqqi Tours?
Day tours and private airport transfers, including Whale & Dolphin-Watching Boat Trip in Hermanus, Marine Big Five Boat Tour from Gansbaai and Shark Cage Diving Boat Trip from Gansbaai. Each has its own page, and the WhatsApp desk combines any of them into one plan with one written price.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Hermanus?
Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about 20 km east of the city centre, 25 to 35 minutes by car on the N2; the V&A Waterfront and Sea Point are about 30 minutes, Camps Bay 35 to 45 minutes, Stellenbosch about 40 minutes and Hermanus about 1 hour 45 minutes by road. Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.
Is there public transport from the airport to Hermanus?
There is no rail or airport in Hermanus and no scheduled bus from Cape Town airport; shared shuttles run a few times a day and taxis are scarce. A private car with a driver is the simplest way to arrive from Cape Town or the airport, with the option of the scenic coastal road and an early start for the boats at Gansbaai. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.
Which tours are available in Hermanus?
Among them: Whale & Dolphin-Watching Boat Trip in Hermanus, Marine Big Five Boat Tour from Gansbaai and Shark Cage Diving Boat Trip from Gansbaai. Each page says whether the day is private or small-group, what it includes and how long it lasts.
Are the tours private or in a group?
Both exist, and each tour page says which. A private tour has a vehicle and guide for your party alone; the desk can make most group tours private on request.
How do I book?
Fill in the form on any page or message us on WhatsApp with the date, the number of travellers and the hotel. A member of our team confirms the price and the details in writing within minutes.
Are the prices fixed?
Yes - every price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you travel and does not change on the day.
Do the drivers and guides speak Arabic or English?
It depends on the city and the day, so we do not promise a particular language; tell us your preference and we do our best. The WhatsApp desk always works in Arabic and English.
Can I change or cancel a booking in Hermanus?
Yes, in the same WhatsApp conversation. The terms depend on the product and on how close to the date the change comes; the desk states them before you pay.
