Knysna

Plan Knysna with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

Morning mist lifts off the Knysna lagoon and the water turns to glass. Fishing boats slip out towards the Heads, the two sandstone cliffs that guard the narrow channel to the sea, and on Thesen Island the cafés set out their chairs by the quays. Behind the town the forest climbs into the Outeniqua mountains, dark green and ancient, sheltering giant yellowwoods and the bright-feathered Knysna turaco.

Knysna at first sight

Knysna is the heart of the Garden Route, the stretch of coast between George and the Tsitsikamma where forest, lagoon, cliffs and beaches follow one another along the N2. From here the whales of Plettenberg Bay, the suspension bridge at Storms River, the ostriches and caves of Oudtshoorn and the lakes of Wilderness are all within a day, and the pace is gentle, green and refreshingly cool.

Why include Knysna in your itinerary?

  • A lagoon town with a wild edge. Knysna sits on a tidal lagoon ringed by forest and opened to the sea through the dramatic Heads, so kayaking, boat trips, cliff views and forest walks are all within minutes of your hotel.
  • The best base for the Garden Route. Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma, Wilderness and the mountain passes to Oudtshoorn are all easy day trips, so you unpack once and see the whole coast.
  • Wildlife without the heat. Seals and whales at Robberg, free-roaming monkeys and birds in forest sanctuaries, elephants in the sanctuaries of the Crags and ostriches in Oudtshoorn make this a gentle, family-friendly nature destination with a mild climate.

Signature experiences in Knysna

The Knysna Heads and the Lagoon

Drive up to the Eastern Head for the classic view of the channel where the lagoon meets the Indian Ocean between two cliffs, then take a ferry across to the Western Head nature reserve for a guided forest walk and lunch under milkwood trees. On the water, lagoon cruises leave from the Waterfront, kayaks can be hired on calm mornings and the local oysters are a Knysna tradition. Our guided day tours combine the viewpoints, a boat trip and Thesen Island.

The Knysna Forest

The forest east and north of the town is the largest indigenous forest in the country, with yellowwood giants, ferns, streams and quiet walking trails at Diepwalle and the Garden of Eden. A small herd of forest elephants still lives here but is almost never seen; the Knysna turaco and bushbuck are more likely. Our driver takes you to the trail heads, and the old forestry stations make a cool, shady half-day.

Plettenberg Bay and Robberg

Half an hour east, Plettenberg Bay has wide beaches, a river lagoon and the Robberg Nature Reserve, a peninsula where easy and longer trails pass a seal colony, fossil dunes and views of whales and dolphins in season. Boat trips from the bay look for whales from June to November, and sightings are never guaranteed but frequent. The Crags nearby hold free-roaming primate and bird sanctuaries that children love.

Tsitsikamma and Storms River

About an hour and a quarter east, the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park is where forest meets a rocky, wave-battered coast. A boardwalk leads to suspension bridges over the mouth of the Storms River, and short trails climb through the forest to viewpoints. On the way, the Bloukrans Bridge offers a bungee jump for the brave and a viewing platform for everyone else. A full day with our driver and guide.

Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves and the Passes

Cross the Outeniqua mountains by a scenic pass and the landscape changes to the dry Little Karoo. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital, with farms where you learn about the birds and their feathers, and the Cango Caves, vast limestone chambers of stalactites with guided walks for all abilities. Meerkat colonies can be watched at sunrise with a specialist guide. It is a long but rewarding day, or an overnight on the way to or from Cape Town.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Knysna

Town Centre and the Waterfront

The compact centre holds the Knysna Quays waterfront with its restaurants, shops and boat departures, the Saturday markets and most of the town's hotels and guesthouses. It is flat, walkable and convenient, with the lagoon views beginning at the end of the main street and the N2 running through the town for easy day trips.

Thesen Island and Leisure Isle

Two islands in the lagoon linked to the town by causeways. Thesen Island is a modern marina village of canals, cafés and boutique hotels with a harbour-town feel, while Leisure Isle is quiet and residential with a small beach, a tidal pool and views of the Heads. Both are peaceful and secure, ideal for couples and families who like to stroll.

The Heads and Brenton-on-Sea

Hotels on the Eastern Head look straight down the channel to the sea and are a short drive from the centre. Across the lagoon, Brenton-on-Sea sits above a long, wild Indian Ocean beach, about fifteen minutes from town, for travellers who want sea air, sunsets and surf rather than lagoon calm.

Plettenberg Bay

Half an hour east, Plettenberg Bay is a relaxed resort town with the best swimming beaches on this stretch of coast, a lively centre and Robberg on its doorstep. It is an excellent alternative base for beach lovers and families, and the whale-watching and sanctuary excursions start here.

How long to stay in Knysna and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend three nights in Knysna. One day for the Heads, the lagoon and the forest, one for Plettenberg Bay, Robberg and the sanctuaries, and one for Tsitsikamma and Storms River. With four nights, add Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves or a slow beach day at Brenton or Plettenberg Bay. Many travellers spend a week driving the whole Garden Route with us.

How to pair it

Knysna pairs naturally with Cape Town, about five hours west by road or an hour's flight from George, and with Hermanus on the way for whales and Cape Agulhas. Eastwards, the Garden Route continues through Tsitsikamma to Gqeberha, about three hours, for Addo's elephants, so a ten-day journey runs Cape Town, Hermanus, Knysna and Addo in one direction. For a longer trip, fly from George to Johannesburg and continue to Hazyview for a Kruger safari, or to Durban for the warm coast and St Lucia.

Best time to visit Knysna and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The Garden Route is mild all year, with rain possible in any month. From November to March the days are warm and the beaches at their best, with December and early January busiest. March to May and September to November bring calm, clear weather with fewer visitors, our favourite seasons. Winter from June to August is cool and green, with whales along the coast and the oyster festival in Knysna in early July.

The daily rhythm

Knysna days are unhurried. Mornings are for the Heads, the forest or a boat on the lagoon while the water is still, followed by lunch at the Waterfront or on Thesen Island. Afternoons suit a drive to Plettenberg Bay or Brenton beach, and the light on the lagoon in the late afternoon is the best of the day. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at the quays and an early night before the next day's excursion.

On-the-ground logistics in Knysna

Arrival

George Airport, the Garden Route's airport, lies about an hour west of Knysna along the N2, with flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town of about an hour and three quarters and an hour respectively. By road, Knysna is about five hours from Cape Town and about three hours from Gqeberha, both scenic journeys that can be broken with stops along the way. We arrange private airport transfers from George, and private cars with driver for the full Garden Route.

Getting around

The town centre, the Waterfront and Thesen Island are easy on foot, and short taxi rides cover the rest of the town. The Garden Route's attractions are spread along the coast, so a private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable way to see Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma and Oudtshoorn without worrying about the mountain passes. Public transport is limited.

Local etiquette tip

Knysna is a small, friendly town where casual dress is the norm and a greeting goes a long way. Forest and reserve trails should be left as you find them: stay on paths, take litter away and keep to the rules at the sanctuaries, where animals are never touched or fed. Tip about ten percent in restaurants. The town is relaxed, but keep valuables out of sight and use arranged transport late in the evening as you would anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask most about Knysna.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Knysna?

Most first-time visitors stay in the town centre near the Waterfront or on Thesen Island, with lagoon views, restaurants and boat trips on foot. Couples often choose the Eastern Head for sea views, while beach-loving families may prefer Plettenberg Bay half an hour east. Our team can suggest a hotel and arrange your private transfer from George.

How many days do you need in Knysna?

Three days is ideal: one for the Heads, lagoon and forest, one for Plettenberg Bay and the sanctuaries, and one for Tsitsikamma. Four days allows Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves. Travellers driving the whole Garden Route from Cape Town to Gqeberha usually spend six or seven days on the coast.

How do you get to Knysna?

The easiest way is to fly to George, about an hour from Johannesburg or Cape Town, then about an hour by road to Knysna, which we arrange with a private transfer. By road, Knysna is about five hours from Cape Town and three from Gqeberha, and many travellers drive one way with our driver, stopping in Hermanus or Tsitsikamma.

Can you see whales from Knysna?

Yes, in season. Southern right and humpback whales pass along the Garden Route from about June to November, and Plettenberg Bay, half an hour away, is the main whale-watching point with boat trips and the Robberg viewpoints. Sightings are never guaranteed, but in season they are frequent. Dolphins and seals are seen all year.

Is Knysna suitable for families?

Very. The lagoon is calm for boat trips and kayaking, the forest trails are short and shady, the sanctuaries at the Crags let children see monkeys and birds up close in natural surroundings, and Plettenberg Bay has safe swimming beaches. The climate is mild and distances between attractions are manageable in a day.

Is halal food available in Knysna?

Knysna is a small town, so dedicated halal restaurants are few, though fresh seafood, vegetarian dishes and self-catering options are easy to find and some guesthouses cater on request. The larger cities of Cape Town and Gqeberha have far more halal choice. Tell our team your needs and we will plan meals along the Garden Route accordingly.

Is Knysna safe for travellers?

Knysna is a relaxed holiday town and generally considered safe for visitors, with the usual care: keep valuables out of sight, lock the car at viewpoints and use arranged transport late in the evening. Check your own government's travel advice before departure, and keep our WhatsApp line handy throughout your stay.

What can I book in Knysna with Haqqi Tours?

Day tours and private airport transfers, including Swim with Seals Boat Trip in Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma Forest Zipline Canopy Tour, Storms River and Knysna Lagoon & Heads Boat Cruise. Each has its own page, and the WhatsApp desk combines any of them into one plan with one written price.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Knysna?

George Airport (GRJ) is the Garden Route airport, about 10 km south-west of George town centre and 15 to 20 minutes by car; Knysna is about 70 km east, roughly an hour on the N2, and Plettenberg Bay about 100 km, around 1 hour 20 minutes. Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.

Is there public transport from the airport to Knysna?

There is no passenger rail on the Garden Route today and no airport bus from George; long-distance coaches stop on the N2, and taxis are scarce outside the towns. A private car with a driver is the simplest way to arrive from George Airport and to link Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma and Oudtshoorn in comfort. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.

Which tours are available in Knysna?

Among them: Swim with Seals Boat Trip in Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma Forest Zipline Canopy Tour, Storms River, Knysna Lagoon & Heads Boat Cruise, Whale-Watching Boat Cruise in Plettenberg Bay and Canyoning Adventure in Plettenberg Bay. Each page says whether the day is private or small-group, what it includes and how long it lasts.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Both exist, and each tour page says which. A private tour has a vehicle and guide for your party alone; the desk can make most group tours private on request.

How do I book?

Fill in the form on any page or message us on WhatsApp with the date, the number of travellers and the hotel. A member of our team confirms the price and the details in writing within minutes.

Are the prices fixed?

Yes - every price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you travel and does not change on the day.

Do the drivers and guides speak Arabic or English?

It depends on the city and the day, so we do not promise a particular language; tell us your preference and we do our best. The WhatsApp desk always works in Arabic and English.

Can I change or cancel a booking in Knysna?

Yes, in the same WhatsApp conversation. The terms depend on the product and on how close to the date the change comes; the desk states them before you pay.
