Full Description

The Knysna Lagoon, heart of the Garden Route

The Knysna Lagoon is in fact a large estuary where the Knysna River meets the sea, filled and emptied twice a day by the tides through a single narrow mouth. Its sheltered water, sandbanks, salt marshes and eelgrass beds make it one of the richest estuaries on the South African coast, and it is protected as part of the Garden Route National Park. The town of Knysna wraps around its northern shore, with forested hills rising behind.

From the boat the lagoon reveals a calmer side of the Garden Route: sailing boats at anchor, oyster beds in the shallows and houses tucked into the hills. Is the Knysna lagoon cruise worth it? For a first view of the town it is one of the best things to do in Knysna, because the main sights are spread around the water and are best seen from it.

The Knysna Heads

The Knysna Heads are two massive sandstone cliffs that stand on either side of the lagoon mouth, leaving only a narrow, wave-swept channel between the estuary and the Indian Ocean. The passage is famous among sailors as one of the most dangerous harbour entrances in the world: rocks lie just below the surface, swells break across the entrance and many vessels were wrecked here in the days when Knysna exported timber by sea.

The cruise heads down the lagoon towards the Heads so you can see the cliffs rise above you and watch the waves roll in through the gap. The skipper keeps to the safe, sheltered water inside the mouth and explains how ships once timed their entry with the tide. On land, the Eastern Head has a viewpoint reached by road, a fine stop after the cruise for the view from above.

Wildlife and nature of the estuary

The lagoon is the habitat of the Knysna seahorse, an endangered species found in only a handful of estuaries on this coast, which hides among the eelgrass in the shallows. Shoals of fish breed in the sheltered water, and the estuary feeds a rich birdlife: African black oystercatchers on the rocks, kingfishers diving from the edges, grey herons and egrets in the marshes and cormorants drying their wings on the channel markers.

Dolphins sometimes enter the lagoon on the tide, and from June to November whales pass along the coast outside the Heads. As always with wild animals, sightings are never guaranteed, but the skipper knows where to look. Knysna is also known for its oysters, farmed in the lagoon for generations, and you will pass the oyster beds along the way.

Knysna town, Thesen Island and Leisure Isle

Knysna grew up as a timber and boat-building town on the edge of the great Garden Route forests, and the lagoon was its harbour. Today the waterfront and the quays are lively with restaurants, shops and boats, and the cruise leaves from the harbour area right in the town. Thesen Island, once a timber yard and sawmill, has been turned into a waterside neighbourhood linked by bridges, with a marina where yachts moor.

Leisure Isle, a small residential island near the Heads, is ringed by quiet beaches and calm swimming spots, and you pass close to it on the way to the mouth. The waterfront, with its cafés and shops, is a pleasant place to sit by the water after the cruise and watch the boats come and go. Our team can suggest a route around town or arrange a private transfer if you need one.

Getting to Knysna and the best time for the cruise

How to get to Knysna: the town lies on the N2 coastal highway, about an hour's drive east of George airport, which has direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg. Plettenberg Bay is about thirty minutes further east, and Cape Town about six hours by road. The meeting point is in the harbour area of the town, a short walk from the waterfront, with parking nearby.

Cruises depart several times a day from morning to late afternoon. The best time to visit Knysna for a lagoon cruise is a calm, sunny morning, when the water is glassy and the light is soft on the cliffs, while the last departure catches the warm late-afternoon light. The lagoon is pleasant all year, with warm summers from November to March and mild, often clear winter days.
