Full Description

Cango Caves

The Cango Caves lie in a limestone ridge in the foothills of the Swartberg, about half an hour north of Oudtshoorn. Formed over millions of years as rainwater dissolved the rock, they open into a series of huge chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone curtains and delicate helictites. The caves have welcomed visitors since the late eighteenth century, and in 1820 they became the subject of one of the earliest cave-protection laws in South Africa.

Your entrance ticket includes a guided tour of about an hour through the main chambers, on paved paths and stairs, where the temperature stays mild all year. The caves usually open daily, with guided tours starting regularly through the day, and our guide times your arrival to avoid the busiest groups. Is it worth visiting the Cango Caves? For the scale of the first great hall alone, absolutely.

Ostrich farm visit

Oudtshoorn is often called the ostrich capital of the world. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, ostrich plumes were among the most fashionable luxuries in Europe and America, and farmers here grew rich enough to build ornate sandstone mansions known as feather palaces. When fashion changed and the boom collapsed, farming continued for leather, meat and feathers, and the birds are still part of everyday life in the valley.

On the farm a local guide introduces you to the birds up close, explaining their remarkable speed, their huge eggs and how chicks are raised. You can usually feed the ostriches, stand on an ostrich egg to test its strength and browse feather and leather crafts. The visit takes about an hour and is a favourite with children. On the drive our guide also points out some of the feather palaces in town.

The Swartberg Pass

The Swartberg Pass is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in South Africa. Built by hand in the 1880s, its gravel switchbacks climb more than a thousand metres from the Klein Karoo to a summit at over 1,500 metres, held up by beautifully crafted dry-stone walls that still stand today. The pass is a national monument, and the Swartberg range is part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site.

From the top the views stretch across both the Klein Karoo and the Great Karoo, over dramatically folded red and grey rock layers. Your private guide drives at a careful pace and stops wherever you want photos. The pass can occasionally close after heavy rain or winter snow, in which case we adapt the route so you still enjoy the mountain scenery safely.

Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo

Oudtshoorn sits in the heart of the Klein Karoo, a long, dry valley between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. Its broad streets, sandstone churches and feather palaces reflect the wealth of the boom years, and today the town is a lively base for exploring the region. Halfway through the day there is time for lunch in town at your own expense, with your guide happy to recommend places.

An Oudtshoorn day trip from Knysna or George is one of the best ways to see a completely different side of South Africa: you leave behind forests and lagoons and cross mountain passes into arid hills and succulent veld in under two hours. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when days are mild; summer is hot but the caves stay cool, and winter brings crisp, clear skies.
