Cape Town Half-Day City Tour with Table Mountain
4.6 (236 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This five-hour guided tour is the easiest introduction to Cape Town. We collect you from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and a licensed guide takes you through the historic heart of South Africa's oldest city: the Castle of Good Hope and the Grand Parade, the Company's Garden and the parliament precinct, the cobbled, brightly painted streets of Bo-Kaap and the empty ground of District Six, where the story of apartheid and the struggle against it becomes real. The tour ends at the foot of Table Mountain, where you can take the rotating cable car to the summit (ticket paid on the day, weather permitting). It suits first-time visitors, families and anyone with only a morning or an afternoon to spare.

Full Description
The historic heart of Cape Town: the Castle, Grand Parade and Company's Garden
Cape Town grew from a supply station founded in 1652 for ships sailing between Europe and Asia, and the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, the star-shaped Castle of Good Hope, still stands where the shoreline used to be. Beside it the Grand Parade, the city's original square, faces the Edwardian City Hall, whose balcony became a symbol of the first free speech after decades of apartheid.
A few streets uphill, the Company's Garden is the green space where the first vegetables for passing ships were grown; today it is a shady park of ancient trees, rose beds and squirrels, flanked by the national museum, the cathedral and the houses of parliament. Your guide links these buildings into one story, from the Dutch and British colonial periods to the democratic era, and explains how the city bowl between the mountain and the sea came to look the way it does.
Bo-Kaap: colourful houses and the oldest mosque in South Africa
On the slopes of Signal Hill, Bo-Kaap is the most photographed neighbourhood in Cape Town: steep cobbled lanes lined with flat-roofed houses painted lime green, pink, turquoise and yellow. It is the historic home of the Cape Malay community, descended from people brought from South-East Asia, India and Africa from the seventeenth century onwards, who kept their Islamic faith, their language and their cooking alive here.
The Auwal Mosque on Dorp Street, established in 1794, is the oldest mosque in South Africa, and the call to prayer still sounds across the neighbourhood several times a day. Your guide explains the origin of the bright colours, the Cape Malay dishes such as bobotie and koeksisters, and why Bo-Kaap survived the forced removals that destroyed other inner-city communities. Halal food is everywhere here, and a short photo stop usually becomes the favourite part of the morning.
District Six and the story of apartheid
Between the city centre and the lower slopes of Devil's Peak lies a wide stretch of open ground where a whole neighbourhood once stood. District Six was a mixed, lively quarter of workers, musicians and traders until the apartheid government declared it a whites-only area in 1966 and bulldozed it, forcing tens of thousands of residents into townships on the sandy Cape Flats far from their work and their mosques and churches.
Driving along its edge, your guide tells the story of the removals, the resistance that followed and the slow process of returning land to former residents that continues today. It is a sober moment on a city tour, but it is the key to understanding modern Cape Town, and it adds meaning to what you see later from the top of Table Mountain, where the townships of the Cape Flats stretch to the horizon.
Table Mountain and the Aerial Cableway
The tour finishes at the lower station of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway on Tafelberg Road, high above the city. The cableway has carried visitors to the summit since 1929; today's cabins rotate slowly during the five-minute ride, so everyone gets the full view of the city, the harbour and the Atlantic. At the top, at just over a thousand metres, paved paths lead to viewpoints over Camps Bay, Robben Island and the Cape Peninsula stretching south.
The cableway ticket is not included and is paid on the day, because the cableway closes when the wind is strong or cloud covers the summit, and we would rather you pay only when it is running. Your guide checks the status before you arrive and, if it is closed, offers an alternative viewpoint such as Signal Hill. Allow at least an hour at the summit; the drop-off back at your hotel follows.
Planning your Cape Town city tour
The tour runs in the morning with pickups around 08:00 and in the afternoon from 14:00, and takes about five hours including the mountain. Morning departures are the better choice for Table Mountain, because the cableway queue is shorter early and the summer south-easter tends to build after midday; afternoon departures suit arrival days and give softer light on the mountain.
Pickup is from hotels within the Cape Town pickup area, which covers the city centre, the Waterfront, Green Point, Sea Point and the Atlantic seaboard. Bring a warm layer even in summer, because the summit is several degrees colder than the city, comfortable shoes, and a camera. Lunch is not included, but the tour can easily be followed by an afternoon at the V&A Waterfront or a sunset at Signal Hill.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
This is a shared guided tour with other travellers in an air-conditioned vehicle. If you would prefer the vehicle and guide for your party only, contact us and we will quote a private version.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
On the shared tour the route is fixed, but the guide adapts the stops to the weather and the cableway status. For a fully flexible itinerary ask us about a private tour.
How many people are on the tour?
Groups travel in a comfortable air-conditioned minibus or coach, so numbers vary by day. Every seat has a window and the audio commentary reaches everyone.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off are included from hotels and apartments within the Cape Town pickup area, which covers the city centre, the Waterfront and the Atlantic seaboard.
What is included and what is not?
Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, air-conditioned vehicle, licensed guide and driver, audio commentary in English and bottled water. Not included: the Table Mountain cableway ticket, lunch and tips.
Why is the cableway ticket not included?
Because the cableway closes in strong wind or cloud. You buy the ticket at the lower station on the day, so you only pay if it is running; your guide checks before you arrive.
How long is the tour?
About five hours from pickup to drop-off, including around an hour and a half at Table Mountain. Departures are in the morning around 08:00 and in the afternoon at 14:00.
Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?
Yes. Children of all ages are welcome, the stops are short and the cableway and summit paths are accessible. Tell us when booking if you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
What should I bring?
A warm layer for the mountain, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, your camera and a bank card or cash for the cableway ticket and lunch.
What is the best time of day for this tour?
The morning departure is best for Table Mountain, with shorter cableway queues and calmer winds. The afternoon departure suits arrival days and gives softer light for photos.
