Private Addo Elephant Park Safari from Jeffreys Bay or Port Elizabeth

Overview

This private Addo Elephant Park safari from Jeffreys Bay or Port Elizabeth is an eight-hour day for your party only. Our guide collects you from your accommodation in a private vehicle, drives to Addo Elephant National Park and spends the day on its waterhole loops and thicket roads looking for elephants, buffalo, zebra, kudu, black rhino and, with luck, lions, before a traditional South African barbecue lunch inside the park. Because the vehicle carries only your group, the route, the pace and the length of every sighting are decided with you, and the guide's attention is yours alone. Park entrance fees are included. It suits families, couples and friends who want a flexible, unhurried safari from the Jeffreys Bay coast or the city. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Full Description

Addo Elephant National Park

Addo Elephant National Park spreads across the Sundays River valley and the Zuurberg mountains of the Eastern Cape, about an hour north-east of Port Elizabeth. It was proclaimed in 1931 to save the last few elephants of the region, and from that handful the herd has grown into a population of several hundred, so elephants are seen on almost every visit, often in large breeding herds. The park is now the third-largest in South Africa and a Big Five reserve, with lions, buffalo, black rhino and elusive leopards in its dense spekboom thicket.

Is Addo worth visiting? For anyone staying on the Jeffreys Bay coast or in Port Elizabeth it is the natural choice: close enough for a day trip, malaria-free, and home to wildlife at a density that makes a single day genuinely rewarding. A private Addo tour lets you see it at your own speed.

The waterholes and the main game-viewing area

The main section of the park is a network of sandy loops through rolling thicket, linked by waterholes where the action concentrates. Hapoor Dam is the most famous: on warm days whole herds arrive to drink, bathe and dust themselves within a few metres of the vehicle, calves tumbling between the adults' legs. Domkrag Dam, Marion Baree, Carol's Rest and the waterhole in front of the main camp are also on the circuit, and each has its own character and its own regular visitors.

On a private safari the guide builds the loop around what you want: more time at the waterholes if elephants are your priority, the quieter southern roads if you hope for lions or rhino, or a slow drive with frequent stops for birds and the flightless dung beetle. Radio reports from other vehicles help, but patience at a good waterhole usually wins.

Lions, rhino and the rest of the Big Five

Lions were reintroduced to Addo and are seen regularly, usually resting in the shade through the heat of the day and moving in the early morning and late afternoon. Black rhino browse the thicket and are glimpsed more often in the dry months, buffalo herds gather near water, and leopards are present but rarely seen. Spotted hyena, red hartebeest, eland, kudu, Burchell's zebra, warthog and ostrich complete the cast, with secretary birds and raptors over the grassland.

Your guide reads tracks and dung on the roads and explains the behaviour you watch, from a bull in musth to a hyena clan at a den. Because the vehicle is private, a sighting lasts as long as you want it to, which is often the difference between a glimpse and a memory. No sighting can be guaranteed.

Barbecue lunch in the park

Midway through the day the guide stops at a picnic site or the main camp inside the park for a traditional South African barbecue lunch, grilled over coals in the open air with salads and bread, so you stay in the bush rather than driving out to a restaurant. It is a relaxed hour with views over the thicket, restrooms nearby and time for children to stretch their legs in the fenced area. Drinks are not included, so bring water and whatever you like to drink; tell us about dietary requirements when you book.

After lunch the afternoon drive follows a different circuit in softer light, when elephants return to the waterholes and the colours of the thicket deepen, before the guide heads for the gate and the drive back to the coast.

Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth and how to get to Addo

Jeffreys Bay is the surf town about seventy-five kilometres west of Port Elizabeth, roughly an hour along the N2, and Addo's main gate is about an hour beyond the city, so a private pickup from Jeffreys Bay is the simplest way to reach the park without a long self-drive. From Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) the park is about an hour away, with the southern Matyholweni gate closer still. Port Elizabeth's airport has flights of about two hours from Johannesburg and under an hour and a half from Cape Town.

The best time to visit Addo is the dry winter from May to September, when the bush is thinner and animals gather at water, though elephants are seen all year and summer brings newborn calves. Addo opening hours follow the sun, roughly sunrise to sunset, and our start times are set to make the most of them.
