Full Description

Gansbaai and the harbour at Kleinbaai

Gansbaai is a fishing town on the Overberg coast about two hours south-east of Cape Town and forty minutes beyond Hermanus, and the small harbour at Kleinbaai, in the suburb of Van Dyks Bay, is where the marine boats launch. The coast here faces the open ocean where the cold Benguela and warm Agulhas currents meet, which fills the water with nutrients and makes the bay around Dyer Island one of the richest marine habitats in Africa. The Marine Big Five idea was born here: five great sea animals in one short trip.

How to get to Gansbaai is easy from either side: from Hermanus the coastal road takes about forty minutes, and from Cape Town the drive along the mountains and the Overberg coast takes about two hours, both covered by the transfer options on this page. The launch site has a reception building where the briefing takes place, a café area, restrooms and a curio shop, and the boats are launched from the slipway at Kleinbaai.

Dyer Island, Geyser Rock and Shark Alley

A few kilometres offshore lies Dyer Island, a low rocky nature reserve that is home to a breeding colony of endangered African penguins and thousands of seabirds, including cormorants, gannets and terns. Beside it, Geyser Rock supports a vast colony of Cape fur seals whose barking carries across the water long before you see them. The narrow channel between the two islands is known as Shark Alley, because great white and bronze whaler sharks patrol it in search of seals, and the boat cruises its edge whenever conditions allow.

The islands are protected and landing is not permitted, but the boat gets close enough for excellent views and photographs of seals lounging on the rocks, penguins coming and going, and the birds wheeling overhead. Is the Marine Big Five trip worth it outside whale season? Yes: the seals, penguins and seabirds are present every month, and dolphins and sharks can be seen at any time of year.

Whales of the Gansbaai coast

From June to November southern right whales migrate from the Antarctic to the sheltered bays of the Overberg coast to calve and mate, and the waters off Gansbaai and Hermanus are among the best places on earth to see them from a boat. They are enormous, slow and curious, often surfacing within sight of the boat, breaching, lifting their tails or lying with calves in the shallows. Humpback whales pass through on their own migration in the same months, and Bryde's whales, which live here year-round, can appear in any season.

The best time to visit Gansbaai for whales is August to October, when numbers peak. Boats keep to the legal viewing distance and let the whales decide how close they come, which they often do. Whale sightings are never guaranteed, and the boat trip runs through the year because the other four animals of the Marine Big Five are present even when the whales have left.

Dolphins, sharks and the marine guide's work

Bottlenose, common and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins all live along this coast and are often seen riding the bow wave or feeding in groups, sometimes in large pods that surround the boat. Sharks are the fifth animal: great whites, bronze whalers and, increasingly, the smaller species that share these waters, seen from the deck as fins or shadows near the surface, particularly around Shark Alley. The guide explains how shark numbers vary from year to year and what the research teams are learning.

A marine biologist or trained guide travels on every trip, pointing out animals, explaining behaviour and answering questions, and part of the trip supports local conservation projects for penguins, sharks and whales. Children usually love the trip, and the briefing before departure makes clear what to expect, including how the sea may feel; if you suffer from motion sickness, take a tablet before the briefing.

The African penguin and seabird sanctuary

Next to the launch site at Kleinbaai is a rehabilitation centre for African penguins and seabirds, where injured, oiled or abandoned birds from Dyer Island and the coast are nursed back to health and released. The visit included in this tour shows the penguins in their pools, explains why the species is endangered and how the centre helps, and is a gentle, educational end to the morning, especially for families.

Allow about thirty minutes for the sanctuary, before or after the boat trip depending on the schedule. Together with the briefing, the trip itself and the soup afterwards, the whole experience lasts around three to three and a half hours at Kleinbaai, and about six hours with transfers from Hermanus or ten hours with transfers from Cape Town. The conservation fee is compulsory and is paid locally; it is not included in the tour price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a shared boat trip with other passengers and a marine guide. If you would like a private charter for your party, ask our team and we will check what is possible on your date.

Which option should I choose?

If you are staying in Gansbaai or Hermanus with a car, the meeting-point option is simplest. The Hermanus transfer option adds return transport from your hotel, and the Cape Town option makes it a full day trip from the city with about two hours' drive each way.

Is hotel pickup included?

Not in the default option, where you meet at Kleinbaai. Return transfers from Hermanus or Cape Town are included in the two transfer options on this page.

What is included?

The boat trip of about two to two and a half hours with a marine guide, the safety briefing and debrief, hot drinks and muffins on arrival, soup and bread afterwards, life jackets and wet-weather gear and the penguin sanctuary visit. The conservation fee, other meals and souvenirs are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person, with a reduced rate for children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

How long is the trip?

About two to two and a half hours at sea, plus the briefing, soup and sanctuary visit, so around three and a half hours at Kleinbaai; about six hours with Hermanus transfers and ten hours with Cape Town transfers.

Will we see all five animals?

Seals, penguins and seabirds are present all year, whales from June to November, and dolphins and sharks in any month, but these are wild animals and no sighting is ever guaranteed. The variety here gives the best odds on the coast.

When is the best time to go?

August to October for whales at their peak; any month for seals, penguins and the chance of dolphins and sharks. Mornings usually have calmer seas, which is why departures are scheduled early.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, families love it, and the penguin sanctuary is a favourite with children. Very young children may find the moving boat difficult, so tell us their ages when booking.

Is it suitable for travellers with reduced mobility?

Boarding involves steps and the deck moves at sea. The base is listed as accessible; tell us about any mobility needs when booking and we will confirm with the crew.

What should I bring?

Warm layers, a windproof jacket, closed shoes, sunscreen, a hat with a strap, seasickness tablets if needed, a camera on a strap and money for the conservation fee.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your option, date and number of travellers on this page and send the booking. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes, and your exact departure time follows the weather check the afternoon before.
