Full Description

Sant Pau Recinte Modernista and its architect

Sant Pau Recinte Modernista was built as a hospital between 1902 and 1930 to designs by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, one of the leaders of Catalan Modernisme. It continued to work as a hospital until 2009 and has since been restored as a cultural site open to visitors. Together with the Palau de la Musica Catalana, it was inscribed by UNESCO in 1997.

Sant Pau Recinte Modernista tickets let you see how Domenech i Montaner planned the complex as a garden city, with pavilions surrounded by trees and paths, based on the belief that light, air and beauty help patients recover. That idea gives the complex a calm, welcoming feel.

The Administration Building and the pavilions

The Administration Building is the most eye-catching structure, with ornate brickwork, coloured tiles, sculptures and a great hall beneath tiled domes and stained glass. Around it, a series of pavilions are decorated with mosaics, ceramic details and turrets, each different from the next.

You can enter several of the pavilions and see restored wards, rooms and displays about the hospital's history. The level of detail is impressive, and many visitors find that Sant Pau is quieter and more relaxed than Barcelona's busiest Gaudi sites. Take time to look up as well as ahead, because much of the detail sits in the ceilings, tiles and stained glass.

Gardens, tunnels and how long to spend

The gardens link the pavilions and are a pleasant place to pause, with palm trees, benches and open lawns. Underneath, a network of underground tunnels once allowed staff and patients to move between the buildings without crossing the open air, and parts of it can be visited.

Allow at least an hour and a half for a comfortable visit, more if you enjoy photography. Your ticket is for independent exploration, and a guided tour is not included. Opening hours change by season, so check the details in the booking panel.

Getting there and combining with the Sagrada Familia

The complex is at the end of Avinguda de Gaudi, a pedestrian street that runs from the Sagrada Familia, so the walk between the two is about ten minutes. The nearest metro station is Hospital de Sant Pau on line 5, and the Sagrada Familia station is within easy walking distance.

Many visitors combine Sant Pau with the Sagrada Familia in one day. Visit Sant Pau first in the morning, then walk along Avinguda de Gaudi for lunch on the terraces before you reach the basilica. If you visit in summer, going early is sensible, as the site is large and largely outdoors.
