Full Description
The Fundacio Joan Miro on Montjuic
The Fundacio Joan Miro opened in 1975 on the slopes of Montjuic, created by Miro himself as a place where the public could see his work. The collection is the largest of its kind, with paintings, sculptures, drawings, textiles and graphic work that follow him from his early years to his last decade.
A Fundacio Joan Miro ticket lets you see how his style changed from detailed landscapes to the simplified shapes, bold colour and poetic symbols that made him famous. Many visitors find the museum a relaxed alternative to the busiest sights in the city.
Josep Lluis Sert's building
The building was designed by Josep Lluis Sert, an architect and close friend of Miro. Miro described it as an open, radiant architecture centred on art and on the contemplation of nature. White walls, skylights and interior courtyards flood the rooms with natural light, and there are terraces with sculptures and views towards the city.
The design makes a visit feel calm and unhurried. Inside, look for the large tapestry, the sculptures and the Mercury Fountain by Alexander Calder, made by Miro friend Alexander Calder. The quiet courtyards and skylights make it a museum where you can slow down and let the light do part of the work.
Temporary exhibitions and Espai 13
Your ticket includes the temporary exhibitions, which change through the year and place Miro in dialogue with other contemporary artists. Espai 13 is a space for emerging artists, often with activities suitable for visitors of all ages.
Combining the permanent collection with the current temporary show takes around two hours. The foundation also has a shop and a cafe, and access is possible until one hour before closing time. Visitors who enjoy contemporary art often like to see how emerging artists respond to Miro's legacy. The shop and cafe are useful for a break, and the terrace outside is a pleasant place to sit if the weather is fine.
Practical tips and how to get there
The foundation is on Parc de Montjuic and is closed on Mondays, on 1 January, and on 25 and 26 December. Opening hours change by season. Food and drinks are not permitted in the galleries, except in the cafe, and the fast-track ticket does not include a reduction for seniors.
The nearest metro station is Paral-lel, followed by the Montjuic funicular, or you can take a bus or walk up from Placa d'Espanya. It is close to MNAC and the Olympic Ring, so it works well as part of a Montjuic day.
