Full Description

The LagOmar house and its volcanic-rock architecture

LagOmar is one of the most unusual buildings in the Canary Islands. Built in the early 1970s into a hillside of volcanic rock above the village of Nazaret, it is a house that seems to grow out of the mountain, with curved walls, stone stairways and rooms carved into caves. It follows the same idea that made Lanzarote famous for architecture, which is that a building should blend into the volcanic landscape rather than stand against it.

The house is long associated with Omar Sharif, the Egyptian actor, and its name recalls him. Today it is open to visitors as a museum and cultural venue, which makes it one of the most popular things to see near Teguise for travellers interested in design and in the island's stories.

Inside the museum: caves, tunnels and terraces

The visit takes you through a series of levels linked by tunnels, staircases and open terraces. Rooms have been shaped in the natural rock, with domed ceilings, hidden corners and windows that frame the surrounding landscape. Gardens with tropical and desert plants soften the black stone, and the terraces give views over Nazaret and the plains of central Lanzarote.

It is a self-guided visit, so you can move slowly and stop where you like. Allow about an hour, or longer if you enjoy photography. Wear comfortable shoes, because the stairs and floors are uneven, and take care on wet surfaces. Food and drinks are not included in the ticket.

Tickets, entry times and visiting tips

Your ticket gives one standard entry to the LagOmar Museum, and you select an entry time when booking from the slots on the booking panel. If you are wondering how to get to LagOmar, it lies in the village of Nazaret, and the exact address is on your voucher. Show your voucher at the entrance on the day, and arrive a few minutes before your slot.

Opening hours and entry times change by season and event schedule, so check the panel for your date rather than relying on a fixed timetable. The best time to visit is when the light is softer, and the house is at its most photogenic in the afternoon. Children have their own ticket price shown on the panel.

What to see nearby

Nazaret sits in the centre of Lanzarote, a short drive from Teguise, the island's old capital, which has a lively Sunday market. Costa Teguise and Arrecife are also close, so LagOmar works well as a stop on a self-drive day. The nearby Fundación César Manrique in Tahíche shows another example of how architecture and volcanic rock can work together.

If you would like a guided day covering other examples, our César Manrique full-day tour visits several of the artist's most famous works in the north. For a museum stop combined with a beach afternoon, the entry times suit visitors who start the day elsewhere. Tips are not included.
