Full Description

Monumento al Campesino and the traditional Canarian farmhouse

The tour starts at the Monumento al Campesino in Mozaga, a tall white sculpture that Manrique created in the late 1960s as a tribute to the island's farmers. Beside it stands a small farmhouse museum showing traditional crafts and tools, and a restaurant built into the edge of a lava field. It is at the geographical centre of Lanzarote, so it makes a natural first stop.

The visit lasts about 25 minutes, enough to see the monument, the crafts and the views across the surrounding fields. It sets the scene for the day by showing what Manrique meant by respect for the land: the peasant culture that survived on dry, volcanic soil is the same culture that shaped the island he later protected from mass development.

Mirador del Río, the cliff-top viewpoint

Mirador del Río stands at around 475 metres on the Risco de Famara cliffs, built in 1973 on a site once used as a military lookout. Manrique hid the building in the rock so that only its white dome and curved windows appear from a distance, and inside there is a café with panoramic glass. The view stretches over the narrow strait of El Río to La Graciosa and the smaller islets of the Chinijo Archipelago.

This is the best stop for photographs of the day, and a visit takes about 25 minutes. Clouds can drift across the cliffs, so the guide chooses the time of your stop to give the clearest view possible. If you ask whether Mirador del Río is worth visiting, the answer is yes, particularly in clear morning light. Entrance is included.

Jameos del Agua, the cave garden and lagoon

Jameos del Agua is part of the volcanic tube created when lava flowed from the Corona volcano to the sea several thousand years ago. Manrique opened it as a cultural centre in 1966, turning collapsed sections of the tube into a garden with palms, white steps, a blue pool and a restaurant. A small lagoon connected to the sea holds rare white blind crabs, and swimming is strictly prohibited.

You can also visit the concert hall carved into the rock, known for its natural acoustics. The visit lasts about 55 minutes, which is enough time to explore the levels and take photographs. It is one of the clearest examples of Manrique's idea that art and nature should work together, and entry is included.

The Cactus Garden in Guatiza

The Jardín de Cactus, opened in 1990, occupies a former volcanic ash quarry near Guatiza, where terraces of black rock form an amphitheatre for more than 1,100 species of cactus and succulents from around the world. The garden covers roughly 5,000 square metres, and a restored windmill stands at its entrance. Guatiza is also known for the prickly pear fields where cochineal insects are farmed.

The visit takes about 35 minutes. Manrique designed it as a garden that respects the shape of the quarry rather than levelling it, and the sculptural forms of the plants against the dark stone make it one of the most photogenic places on the tour. Entry is included.

Fundación César Manrique in Tahíche

The foundation is in the artist's former residence in Tahíche, built in 1968 on top of a lava flow from the eruptions of the 1730s. The house makes use of five natural volcanic bubbles as rooms, connected by tunnels and open to a garden with a pool. Upstairs, white rooms with large windows display his paintings and works by artists he admired.

The guided visit lasts about 45 minutes and explains how Manrique worked, how he came back from New York to design his own island, and how his ideas protected Lanzarote from tall hotels and billboards. It is the best place to understand the whole tour. Entry is included, and the stop usually comes on the way back.
