Overview
This guided buggy tour explores the quiet countryside of southern Mallorca, a short drive from Palma, on a mix of scenic country roads and exciting off-road tracks around Llucmajor. Driving your own buggy in a small convoy behind an English-speaking guide, you pass dry-stone walls, almond and carob orchards, traditional windmills and farmhouses, with views towards the hill of Randa and its sanctuaries. Our default option is the four-seater buggy, ideal for families and small groups; a two-seater is also available. Each buggy has a walkie-talkie so the guide can share tips and stories along the way. Full Description
The buggy base near Llucmajor
The tour starts at the buggy base near Llucmajor, about 30 minutes by car south-east of Palma. Llucmajor is the largest municipality in Mallorca by area, a traditional market town surrounded by farmland that stretches down to the sea cliffs of the south coast. Its countryside is much quieter than the coastal resorts and perfect for exploring on wheels.
At the base, the guide gives a safety briefing, shows you how to drive the buggy and hands out walkie-talkies so every vehicle can hear the instructions on the road. The exact location is sent with your booking confirmation. If you are wondering how to get there, a rental car or taxi from Palma or Playa de Palma is the easiest option; the base is close to the main road to Llucmajor.
Off-road tracks and country roads
Leaving the base, the convoy follows narrow country lanes lined with dry-stone walls before turning onto dirt tracks through the fields. The off-road sections add excitement, with dust, bumps and gentle climbs, while the paved stretches let you relax and enjoy the scenery. The guide adapts the pace to the group, so beginners and experienced drivers both feel comfortable.
Along the way you see the classic landscape of rural Mallorca: almond trees that blossom white and pink in late January and February, carob and olive trees, fig orchards and old stone farmhouses called possessions. It is a side of the island most visitors never discover, and one of the most original things to do near Palma for travellers who want adventure and authenticity.
Windmills of the Mallorcan countryside
The plains around Llucmajor and the centre of the island are dotted with traditional windmills, some with sails and others with metal blades. For centuries they were used to grind grain or, more often, to pump water from underground for the fields, and they became a symbol of rural Mallorca.
Many still stand along the route, restored or quietly weathering, and the guide stops at good spots for photos. Over the walkie-talkie, you learn about farming traditions, the island's water challenges and the local products that come from this land, from almonds and carobs to olive oil. These short stops break up the drive and give everyone a chance to stretch their legs.
Views of Randa and its sanctuaries
Rising above the plain, the hill of Randa reaches about 540 metres and is one of the landmarks of central Mallorca. On its slopes and summit stand three historic sanctuaries, including one built into the face of a sandstone cliff, and from the top the view stretches across the whole island to the sea.
The buggy route offers views towards Randa from the surrounding countryside, a reminder of how varied the island's landscape is just a few kilometres from the beaches. The best time for a buggy tour in Mallorca is spring and autumn, when the fields are green and the temperatures mild; in summer the morning tour is cooler. After about three hours, the convoy returns to the base.
