Full Description
The White Temple, Wat Rong Khun
Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is a modern art temple designed by the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, with construction beginning in 1997. Its white plaster is set with small mirrored glass pieces that sparkle in the sun, and it is unlike any traditional Thai temple.
You cross a bridge over a sea of reaching hands, symbolising the escape from desire and hell, before entering the main hall. Anyone searching for a White Temple tour from Chiang Mai should know that shoulders and knees must be covered, and that photos are not allowed inside the hall. It is the highlight of most Chiang Rai day trips.
The Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten
Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, is a newer temple whose name means the dancing tiger. It was built by a student of the White Temple's artist, and opened to visitors in the 2010s. Its exterior is a deep sapphire blue with gold decoration.
Inside, a white Buddha image sits against the blue, and murals cover the walls. The Blue Temple in Chiang Rai is smaller and quicker to visit than the White Temple, and photographs are best in the late morning light. Our guide explains the symbolism of the colours and the dragon-like naga guardians at the entrance.
The Red Temple, Huay Pla Kang
Wat Huay Pla Kang, often called the Red Temple, rises on a hill above Chiang Rai and is known for its Chinese-style nine-storey pagoda and a very tall white statue of Guanyin, the goddess of mercy. A stairway guarded by dragons leads up to the pagoda.
From the top you can see the surrounding hills and the city. Some visitors ask whether the Red Temple in Chiang Rai is worth the visit, and the answer is yes for its unusual mix of Thai and Chinese styles. Entrance fees to the White, Blue and Red temples are included in our default option.
