Full Description
King's Staith, York's historic quay
Your cruise begins at King's Staith, a cobbled quay beside the River Ouse that has been a landing place for boats since the Middle Ages. For centuries ships unloaded cargoes of wool, grain, coal and timber here, linking York with the port of Hull and the North Sea. The tall brick warehouses and inns that line the quay recall the city's busy trading past.
The Ouse rises dramatically after heavy rain, and flood markers on the walls show how high the water has reached over the years. York was founded by the Romans in 71 AD as Eboracum precisely because of this river, which allowed supplies to reach the fortress. A York river cruise from King's Staith is the perfect way to understand how the city grew around the water.
Ouse Bridge and the medieval Guildhall
Heading upstream, the boat passes beneath Ouse Bridge, the oldest crossing point in the city. A bridge has stood here since Viking times, when York was the thriving trading town of Jorvik; the medieval bridge was lined with houses, shops and even a chapel. The present stone bridge was completed in 1821.
Just beyond, the Guildhall rises directly from the riverbank. Built in the fifteenth century as a meeting place for the city's guilds and council, it was badly damaged by bombing in 1942 and carefully restored, with its great timber-roofed hall. From the water you see its stone walls and the riverside steps that once received visitors arriving by boat, a view few walkers ever enjoy.
Lendal Bridge, Museum Gardens and St Mary's Abbey
Next comes Lendal Bridge, an ornate cast-iron bridge opened in 1863, decorated with Gothic tracery and painted shields. Beside it stand two medieval towers, between which a great chain was once stretched across the river to control boats entering the city. From here, look up for a glimpse of the towers of York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe.
Along the bank lie the Museum Gardens, botanical gardens laid out in the 1830s, with lawns sloping down to the river. Among the trees stand the romantic ruins of St Mary's Abbey, once one of the richest Benedictine monasteries in England, founded in the eleventh century and closed in 1539. The Yorkshire Museum and a Roman tower are also in the gardens, worth exploring after your cruise.
Skeldergate and the Millennium Bridge
The boat then turns downstream, passing King's Staith again and sailing under Skeldergate Bridge, completed in 1881 with a section that could once open for tall ships. On the left, the River Foss joins the Ouse beside the old warehouses, and on the right you see the grassy mound of York Castle, crowned by its medieval keep.
Beyond the city walls the river becomes greener and quieter, with willow-lined banks, rowing boats and riverside parks. The cruise reaches the graceful Millennium Bridge, a pedestrian and cycle bridge opened in 2001 with a striking white arch, before turning back. On sunny days this peaceful stretch is a favourite with families and wildlife, including swans and herons.
Why take a York boat trip
A York boat tour is one of the best things to do in York when you want to rest your feet and still see the sights. In 45 minutes you cover the river heart of the city, with commentary that brings Romans, Vikings, merchants and floods to life. It works well at the start of a visit to get your bearings, or after a morning at the Minster and the Shambles.
Because you can join any daytime departure between 10:30 and 15:00 on your chosen day, it is easy to fit into your plans. Spring and summer bring the liveliest riverbanks, while autumn colours in the Museum Gardens are beautiful. The cruise is popular with families, and children enjoy watching the boat pass under the low bridges.
