Full Description

Pompeii, the Roman city buried by Vesuvius

Pompeii was a busy Roman town of merchants, craftsmen and farmers on the Bay of Naples when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Within hours it was buried under several metres of ash and pumice, which sealed streets, shops, homes and even graffiti on the walls. The town lay forgotten until excavations began in the eighteenth century, and today the archaeological park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering about sixty-six hectares, of which roughly two thirds have been uncovered.

Is Pompeii worth visiting? For most travellers it is the single most memorable sight in southern Italy, because nowhere else can you walk through a complete ancient city with its pavements, fountains and doorways still in place. This Pompeii day trip from Positano focuses on the heart of the town, where your guide brings the daily life of its inhabitants back to life.

The Forum, temples and public baths

The visit usually begins near the Forum, the long open square that was the political, religious and commercial centre of the city. Around it stand the Temple of Apollo with its bronze statue copy, the Basilica where justice was administered, the market hall and the Temple of Jupiter framed by Vesuvius itself. Standing here, your archaeologist guide explains how the town was governed and how the eruption unfolded.

Close by are the Forum Baths and the larger Stabian Baths, among the best-preserved bath complexes of the Roman world, with changing rooms, cold, warm and hot pools and stucco ceilings that still hold their decoration. They show how central bathing was to social life, and they are often the part that children remember most. Expect about forty minutes for this first section of the walk.

Houses, frescoes and the plaster casts

Beyond the public buildings lie the private houses that made Pompeii famous. Grand residences such as the House of the Faun, which fills an entire block, preserve mosaics, gardens and courtyards, while smaller homes keep painted walls in deep red and ochre. Your guide chooses the houses that are open on the day of your visit, as the park rotates access for conservation.

The most moving moment of any Pompeii guided tour is the sight of the plaster casts. In the nineteenth century archaeologists poured plaster into the hollows left in the ash by the victims, recovering the exact positions of people and animals in their final moments. They are displayed with respect in several areas of the site, and your guide explains what science has since learned from them.

Streets, bakeries and everyday life

Pompeii's streets are paved with large volcanic stones and crossed by raised stepping stones, so that pedestrians kept their feet dry while carts passed between them; you can still see the ruts left by the wheels. Along the main thoroughfares are bakeries with their millstones and ovens, and street-food counters with clay jars set into the marble, the ancestors of today's takeaway.

These details turn the ruins into a living town and are the reason the guided walk feels short. The route is on uneven stone and partly in full sun, so comfortable shoes matter. If you still have energy after the two hours, your guide can point you to further areas, keeping in mind the departure time agreed with the group for the drive back to Positano.

Getting there from Positano and when to go

Many visitors ask how to get to Pompeii from Positano. By public transport it means a bus to Sorrento and a suburban train, often crowded in summer; with this tour we drive you directly along the coast road and over the Sorrento peninsula in about an hour and a quarter each way, with views of the Bay of Naples on the way.

Pompeii opening hours are generally from 9:00 until early evening from April to October, and until late afternoon from November to March, with last entry about an hour and a half before closing. The best time to visit Pompeii is spring or autumn, when the heat is gentler; in summer the morning departure is the more comfortable choice. Both departures give you the afternoon free for the beach or the boats of Positano.
