Full Description
The galar, Poland's traditional river boat
For hundreds of years, galars were the workhorses of the Vistula. These long, flat-bottomed wooden barges carried salt from Wieliczka, grain from the farmlands and timber from the forests downstream to Gdańsk, where the goods were shipped across the Baltic. The river trade made Poland rich in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the rafters and boatmen who sailed the galars were a familiar sight in Warsaw.
Today, replica galars built by local boat enthusiasts keep that tradition alive. Sitting on the open wooden deck, close to the water, feels very different from a modern tourist boat. A Warsaw galar cruise is slow and quiet, which makes it a good way to hear about the city's river history while simply enjoying the views.
The Vistula riverside boulevards and Old Town skyline
The Vistula is Poland's longest river, flowing over 1,000 kilometres from the Beskid Mountains to the Baltic Sea. In Warsaw its left bank has been transformed into the Vistula Boulevards, a promenade of steps, cafés, fountains and cycle paths that fills with people on summer evenings.
From the boat you see the Old Town rising on its escarpment, with the red roofs, church towers and the Royal Castle that were rebuilt after the Second World War. You also pass the modern Copernicus Science Centre and several of the city's bridges. If you are looking for things to do in Warsaw by the river, a boat trip on the Vistula is one of the most relaxing ways to see the historic centre.
The wild right bank and the National Stadium
Across the water, the right bank in the Praga district looks almost untouched, with sandy beaches, willow trees and riverside woods. Much of this stretch is a protected Natura 2000 nature area and a haven for nesting birds, and it gives Warsaw a rare feel of wilderness right in the city centre.
Rising behind it is the National Stadium, built for the Euro 2012 football championship, its red and white façade echoing the colours of the Polish flag. The contrast between the lively boulevards on one side and the green, wild bank on the other is what makes the Vistula special, and it is best appreciated from the water.
