Full Description
Palace of Culture and Science, Stop 1
Both routes start at the Palace of Culture and Science, the tallest building in Poland at 237 metres including its spire. It was a gift from the Soviet Union, completed in 1955 in the monumental socialist-realist style, and for decades it was the symbol Warsaw residents loved to hate. Today it houses theatres, cinemas, museums and a congress hall.
The viewing terrace on the 30th floor offers the best panorama of Warsaw, so many visitors go up before boarding the bus to get their bearings. The Palace stands beside Warszawa Centralna station and the Centrum metro, which makes it the natural place to begin a Warsaw bus tour. Tickets for the terrace are sold separately at the building.
Old Town and Castle Square
Both routes stop at the Old Town, the rebuilt historic centre and a UNESCO World Heritage site. From the stop you can walk to the Market Square with its Mermaid statue, the city's symbol, and to Castle Square, where Sigismund's Column has stood since 1644 in front of the Royal Castle.
The Royal Castle was blown up in 1944 and rebuilt only in the 1970s and 1980s using fragments saved by museum staff. Its state rooms and paintings by Canaletto's nephew Bernardo Bellotto, whose views of Warsaw guided the reconstruction, are among the city's highlights. Plan at least two hours here: the Old Town is best explored on foot before hopping back on the bus.
The Royal Route and Łazienki Royal Park
The Blue Route follows part of the Royal Route, the elegant avenue that once linked the Royal Castle with the kings' summer residences. You pass the Presidential Palace, the Chopin Museum, the National Museum and the Three Crosses Square before reaching Łazienki Royal Park, the largest park in central Warsaw.
Łazienki was created in the 18th century for Poland's last king, Stanisław August Poniatowski. Its Palace on the Isle rises from a lake, peacocks roam the lawns and the Chopin Monument stands among the trees. Visiting Łazienki Park is one of the most pleasant things to do in Warsaw on a sunny day, and a hop-on hop-off pass saves you the long walk from the centre.
Warsaw's great museums
The routes connect several of Europe's most acclaimed modern museums. The Warsaw Rising Museum, opened in 2004, tells the story of the 63-day uprising against German occupation in 1944 with photographs, films and a replica sewer tunnel. POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews covers a thousand years of Jewish life in Poland and stands on the site of the former ghetto.
On the riverside, the Copernicus Science Centre is packed with hands-on exhibits that make it a favourite with children, while the red-and-white National Stadium rises across the Vistula. Museum entry is not included in the bus pass, so check opening days: many Warsaw museums close on Mondays.
