Full Description

Hermanus: the whale capital of South Africa

Hermanus is a seaside town on Walker Bay, about one and a half hours' drive east of Cape Town, and it has earned its reputation as the best place in the country for whale watching. From roughly June to November southern right whales leave their feeding grounds near Antarctica and gather in the sheltered bay to mate, give birth and nurse their calves, often within a few hundred metres of the shore. The town even keeps the tradition of a whale crier who announces sightings along the seafront.

Is Hermanus worth visiting? For whale lovers, absolutely: the clifftop path that runs along the town's rocky coastline, the Old Harbour and the long beaches of Grotto and Voëlklip make it a lovely stop. On this tour we pass through the Hermanus area on the way to the boat, so you see the whale coast from land before going out to sea.

Gansbaai harbour and the De Kelders cliffs

The boat trip launches from the small fishing harbour of Gansbaai, on the eastern edge of Walker Bay. Gansbaai is a working fishing community, and its harbour is the base for boats heading out to the bay, to Dyer Island and to the channel between the island and Geyser Rock. From here the boat cruises west along the cliffs of De Kelders, a stretch of coastline with caves and tall rock walls where whales often rest and play close to the shore.

The boat ride lasts about two hours, depending on the sea and on what is found. The vessel is designed for whale watching, with open decks for viewing and photography and a covered area for shelter. The skipper keeps a respectful distance from the animals, as South African rules require, and lets the whales approach on their own terms.

Southern right whales and other marine life

Southern right whales are the stars of the trip. They are large baleen whales, recognised by their V-shaped blow, the absence of a dorsal fin and the pale growths called callosities on their heads, which help researchers identify individuals. In the bay they breach, slap their tails and fins on the water and lie still at the surface with their calves. Humpback, Bryde's and minke whales are seen at times, and orcas pass through occasionally.

The bay is also rich in other life. Dolphins often ride the bow wave, Cape fur seals bask on the rocks and swim around the boat, and Dyer Island is home to African penguins and seabirds such as cormorants and gulls. The guide explains what you see as it happens. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the variety of marine life makes every trip different.

Best time for whale watching from Cape Town

The best time to visit Hermanus for whales is between June and November, with the peak usually in September and October, when the bay can hold large numbers of mothers and calves. Outside this season the trip focuses on dolphins, seals, penguins and seabirds, and Bryde's whales can be seen in the area year-round. Morning seas tend to be calmer, which is why the tour starts early.

How to get to Hermanus from Cape Town? By road it is about 120 kilometres, and Gansbaai lies about 45 minutes beyond it, so a tour with transport saves you the driving and the planning of boat times. This whale watching day trip from Cape Town fits in around seven hours, leaving the evening free in the city.
