Marine Wildlife Boat Trip in Table Bay, Cape Town
4.7 (1,349 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
Table Bay, the stretch of Atlantic between Cape Town's harbour and Robben Island, is a surprisingly rich piece of sea, and this ninety-minute eco-cruise is the easiest way to see it. The boat leaves the V&A Waterfront past the breakwater, where Cape fur seals lounge on the jetties, into open water where dolphins often ride the bow wave, African penguins fish and gannets and albatrosses work the water; in season whales pass through the bay. A marine guide explains what you see, with Table Mountain as the backdrop. The default option includes transfers from central Cape Town. Sightings are never guaranteed. It suits families, photographers and sea lovers.

Full Description
V&A Waterfront and the harbour
The cruise departs from the quays of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the working harbour at the heart of Cape Town that now mixes fishing boats and tugs with shops, restaurants and the Two Oceans Aquarium. As the boat moves through the basins you pass the swing bridge, the Clock Tower and the dry dock, and almost immediately meet the first wildlife: Cape fur seals hauled out on the jetties and floating with a flipper in the air to regulate their temperature.
Leaving through the harbour entrance you get the classic view back at the city with Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Signal Hill rising behind it, the picture that defines Cape Town from the sea. On the default option our driver collects you at your accommodation about thirty minutes before the 11:00 or 13:00 departure and returns you afterwards; on the meeting-point option you simply come to the quay shown on your voucher fifteen minutes early.
Table Bay and its marine life
Table Bay is fed by the cold Benguela Current, which carries nutrients up from the deep and makes the water unusually productive. This is why so many animals are found so close to a major city: the bay is a feeding ground. The boat is fast and stable, and the skipper reads the water for signs: a flock of diving gannets usually means fish near the surface, and dolphins are often not far behind. Common dolphins and dusky dolphins both occur here, sometimes in large pods that leap and ride the bow wave.
Keep an eye out for the strange outline of a sunfish, a huge flat fish that basks on its side at the surface, and for the dorsal fin of a Bryde's whale, which lives in these waters all year. The guide on board explains the ecology of the bay and how the shark spotters, the marine reserves and the penguin conservation work fit together. Wild animals are free to come and go, so every trip is different.
Robben Island from the water
The cruise heads towards Robben Island, the low island about eleven kilometres offshore that is famous for its history as a prison and is now a World Heritage Site. The boat does not land, but from the water you see the island's lighthouse and buildings, and more importantly its wildlife: a colony of African penguins breeds on the island, and the birds are often seen fishing in rafts on the way there and back, porpoising through the swell to bring food to their chicks.
The island's rocky shores also hold seals and seabird colonies, and the channel between it and the mainland is a corridor for whales and dolphins moving along the coast. For those who want to go ashore, we can arrange tickets for the ferry and the island tour on another day; this cruise is about the sea around it.
Whales, seabirds and the seasons
Which whales can you see from Cape Town? Southern right whales come to the Cape coast to calve between June and November, and humpback whales migrate past in large numbers, with big feeding groups often seen off the Cape between late spring and autumn. Bryde's whales are resident. Table Bay sees all three at different times, which is why the best whale watching in Cape Town from a boat varies by month; our team can tell you what has been seen recently.
The birdlife is a highlight in its own right: Cape gannets plunge-diving, cormorants and terns in flocks, and in winter the chance of a black-browed albatross gliding past on its long wings. Bring a windproof layer whatever the season, as the Atlantic breeze is cool even in summer, and sunglasses and a hat for the glare. The trip is weather-dependent and may be moved or cancelled if the sea is rough; we tell you in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private trip?
It is a shared cruise with other passengers and a marine guide on board. If you would like the boat for your own group, ask us and we will check private charter availability.
Can we change the route or the pace?
The skipper follows the wildlife, so the route changes with the sightings on the day. Departure times are fixed at 11:00 and 13:00.
How many people are on the boat?
The boat carries a moderate number of passengers with open viewing on deck; numbers vary by departure.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person, with adult and child rates. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option, with and without transfers.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes on the default option, from accommodation in central Cape Town. The second option on this page is for guests who prefer to meet at the Waterfront.
What is included?
The ninety-minute marine wildlife cruise, a marine guide, life jackets and the safety briefing, plus return transfers on the default option. Meals and drinks are not included.
How long is the trip?
About ninety minutes on the water; with transfers, allow around two and a half hours in total.
Will we see whales?
Only in season and only by chance: southern right whales mostly from June to November, humpbacks in large groups at other times of year, and resident Bryde's whales. Dolphins, seals and penguins are seen on most trips, but nothing is guaranteed.
Is it suitable for children and for people with reduced mobility?
Children from two years are welcome with an adult and usually love the seals and dolphins. The fast boat is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility or heart problems.
What should I bring?
A windproof jacket, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, a camera with a strap and seasickness tablets if you need them.
What is the best time of year?
Every season offers something: whales in winter and spring, large humpback groups around the turn of the year, dolphins and seabirds all year. Calm mornings generally give the smoothest ride.
