Overview

Full Description

Hoedspruit: the safari town of the Greater Kruger

Hoedspruit is a small town in Limpopo province, at the foot of the Drakensberg escarpment and close to the western boundary of Kruger National Park. It is surrounded by private game reserves and wildlife estates, many of which form part of the Greater Kruger conservation area, and it is a favourite base for safaris thanks to its airport and its quiet bush atmosphere.

The landscape around the town is classic Lowveld bushveld: mopane and acacia woodland, marula trees, seasonal rivers and open clearings where herds gather. Is Hoedspruit worth visiting? For anyone planning a Kruger safari, it offers excellent game viewing in private reserves, where guides can follow the animals closely, plus easy access to the Panorama Route and the Blyde River Canyon.

The Big Five and other wildlife

The Big Five are the lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo and rhinoceros, the animals once considered the hardest to track on foot; today they are the animals every safari visitor hopes to see. The private reserves around Hoedspruit are home to all five, along with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, kudu, impala, warthogs, hyenas and, with luck, cheetahs and wild dogs.

Your field guide reads tracks and listens for alarm calls to find the animals, and shares the stories of each species. Birdlife is spectacular too, with lilac-breasted rollers, hornbills, eagles and vultures. Sightings are never guaranteed, as the animals roam freely, but four hours in an open vehicle give good chances to see a wide variety of wildlife.

Morning or afternoon: which game drive to choose

The morning drive starts at 05:00, as the sun rises over the bush. The air is cool, predators may still be active after the night, and the light is beautiful for photography. It lasts about four hours and leaves the rest of the day free for the Panorama Route, a visit to a wildlife rehabilitation centre or a rest by the pool.

The afternoon drive starts at 15:30 and lasts three and a half to four hours. Animals come out again as the heat fades, and the drive ends in the golden light of sunset, a magical time in the bush. Both options follow the same reserve and include the same services, so choose the time that best fits your plans.

How to get to Hoedspruit and the best time for a safari

Hoedspruit has its own airport with flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and it is about one and a half to two hours' drive north of Hazyview along the R40. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near Nelspruit is another option. Because the morning drive starts very early, it is easiest to stay near Hoedspruit the night before; the exact directions to the meeting point are shared after booking, and we can arrange a private transfer on request.

The best time for a Kruger-area safari is the dry winter, from May to September, when the vegetation is thin and animals gather at water. Summer, from November to March, is green and lush, with newborn animals and migrant birds, though afternoon storms are common.
