4.6 (239 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This three-hour Pilanesberg game drive from Sun City takes you into one of South Africa's most rewarding Big Five parks in an open safari vehicle with a registered field guide. Pilanesberg National Park lies inside the ring of an extinct volcano right next to the Sun City resort, so within minutes of the meeting point you are on gravel tracks looking for elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard, giraffe and zebra around the Mankwe Dam. You can choose a dawn, mid-morning or late-afternoon departure, each with its own light and animal activity. The drive is shared with other guests in a small group, the park is malaria-free, and the short format suits families staying at Sun City and day visitors from Johannesburg who want a real safari in a single afternoon.

Full Description
Pilanesberg National Park, a Big Five park beside Sun City
Pilanesberg National Park covers roughly five hundred square kilometres of bushveld in North West province, about two and a half hours' drive from Johannesburg and directly adjoining the Sun City resort. It was created in the late 1970s through one of the largest game-relocation projects of its time, when thousands of animals were brought in to re-wild former farmland. Today it is Big Five country and, importantly for families, a malaria-free one.
A Pilanesberg game drive from Sun City is the quickest safari in the region: the park gate is minutes from the resort, so almost all of the three hours are spent among the animals. The park sits in a transition zone between the dry Kalahari and the wetter Lowveld, which is why so many species share the same valleys. For travellers asking whether Pilanesberg is worth visiting on a short trip, the answer is that few places offer so much wildlife so close to a hotel bed.
The volcanic crater and the Mankwe Dam
The landscape is what makes Pilanesberg unusual. The park lies inside the eroded remains of an ancient alkaline volcano, roughly twelve hundred million years old, whose concentric rings of hills still rise around a central basin. From the open vehicle the guide points out these rings and the way the valleys funnel animals towards water, which makes game viewing easier than in flat bush.
At the centre of the crater lies the Mankwe Dam, the largest body of water in the park and a natural gathering point. Hippos surface in the shallows, crocodiles rest on the banks and herds of zebra, wildebeest and impala come to drink, while fish eagles and kingfishers hunt from the dead trees. Most three-hour drives pass the dam or one of its hides, and the guide decides the exact route each time based on the latest sightings reported by other vehicles.
Big Five and the wildlife you may see
Pilanesberg is one of the few parks near Johannesburg where all of the Big Five live freely: elephant, lion, white and black rhino, buffalo and leopard. Elephant and rhino are seen on a large share of drives, lions are found most often at dawn and dusk, and leopards are the prize sighting that depends on luck. Giraffe, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, warthog, jackal and brown hyena are common, and the park is a favourite with birdwatchers.
Your field guide is trained to read the bush: fresh tracks on the road, alarm calls from impala, vultures circling. The open vehicle lets everyone see and photograph without a window in the way, and the guide stops whenever something interesting appears. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and that uncertainty is part of what makes each Pilanesberg safari different from the last.
Sun City as your base
Sun City is a large resort complex built in the 1970s on the southern edge of Pilanesberg, with hotels, a water park called the Valley of the Waves, golf courses and entertainment venues. For many visitors it is the base for a Pilanesberg safari: you can spend the morning on a game drive and the afternoon by the pool. The game drive meets at an agreed point inside the resort, and no transfer from your room is included, so allow time to reach it.
If you are coming for the day from Johannesburg rather than staying at the resort, note that the Sun City day-visitor entrance fee and the Valley of the Waves are not part of this tour. We can arrange a private transfer from Johannesburg or Pretoria that drops you at the meeting point in time for the drive and brings you back in the evening.
Best time of day and season for a Pilanesberg game drive
The three departures each have a character. The dawn drive leaves in the cool half-light when predators are still active and the hills glow orange; the mid-morning drive is warmer and better for families with young children; the late-afternoon drive catches the animals coming out again as the heat fades and ends as the sun drops behind the crater rim. Many guests do a dawn and an afternoon drive on different days.
The best time to visit Pilanesberg for wildlife is the dry winter from May to September, when the grass is short, the trees are bare and animals gather at the remaining water. Summer, from November to March, is green and hot with dramatic afternoon storms, newborn antelope and the best birdlife. Winter mornings can be close to freezing in an open vehicle, so dress in layers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
The listed option is a shared game drive in an open safari vehicle with other guests, led by a registered field guide. Ask us if you would prefer a private vehicle for your party.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. The drive leaves from a meeting point inside the Sun City resort, and you make your own way there. We can arrange a private transfer from Johannesburg or Pretoria if you are visiting for the day.
What is included?
A three-hour game drive in Pilanesberg National Park, transport in an open safari vehicle and an English-speaking registered field guide. Sun City entrance for day visitors, food, drinks and tips are not included.
How long is the game drive?
About three hours in the park, plus the short drive between the Sun City meeting point and the gate.
Which departure time is best?
Dawn is best for predators and cool light, late afternoon for the sunset over the crater and animals returning to the open, and mid-morning for families with small children who prefer a later start.
Will we see the Big Five?
All five live in Pilanesberg, and elephant and rhino are seen on many drives, but sightings are never guaranteed. Three hours gives a good chance of several species, not a promise of all of them.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes, children are welcome and there is a reduced child rate. In an open vehicle they must stay seated and quiet near animals; the mid-morning drive is usually the easiest for very young ones.
Is it suitable for visitors with reduced mobility?
Boarding an open safari vehicle requires a step up. Tell us about any mobility needs when you book and we will confirm what help is possible.
What should I bring?
Warm layers for early and late drives, sunscreen, a hat, water, binoculars and a camera. Neutral-coloured clothing is best.
Is the price per person or per group?
The shared drive is priced per person, with a separate child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your chosen date and time.
Is Pilanesberg a malaria area?
No. Pilanesberg National Park is malaria-free, which makes it a popular choice for families and older travellers.
How do I book and confirm?
Select your date and departure time in the booking panel on this page and send the request. Our team confirms the booking and the exact meeting point on WhatsApp within minutes.
