Overview

The Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas is Madrid's largest bullring and one of the city's most recognisable landmarks, a Neo-Mudéjar brick monument designed by José Espeliú. It is a self-guided architecture and culture visit, not a bullfight, and suits curious travellers, photographers and history lovers.

Full Description

The Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas

Las Ventas was inaugurated in 1931 and is the most important bullring in Spain, with room for around 24,000 spectators. Designed by architect José Espeliú, its red-brick facade is decorated with horseshoe arches and ceramic panels in the Neo-Mudéjar style, a revival of Moorish-inspired design that is very popular in Madrid. A Las Ventas bullring tour is therefore as much about architecture as it is about tradition.

Your ticket lets you walk into the arena and see the sand ring, the stands and the gates from the inside. Many visitors are surprised by how large the space feels, and it is a good place for photographs. Remember that the ticket is for a visit only and does not include a bullfight.

The Bullfighting Museum and Audio Guide

Inside the complex is the bullfighting museum, where the audio guide included in your ticket explains the exhibits. You see traditional costumes, posters, paintings and objects that tell the story of the tradition in Spain and of the great figures connected with Las Ventas. The audio guide is available in ten languages: Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Russian, Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese.

Bullfighting is a subject about which people have strong and varied opinions. The visit is designed to explain the history, the vocabulary and the rules, so that visitors can form their own view. It is one of the more unusual cultural visits in Madrid, and audio guide entries help you follow the story without a live guide.

The Ring, the Stands and the Fair of San Isidro

From the stands you can see how the arena is organised: the seating divided into sun and shade, the entrance gates, and the shape of the ring itself. Las Ventas is the heart of the San Isidro fair, held around the feast of Madrid's patron saint in May and June, which is the busiest period of the year.

On other days, the building is quiet, which makes it easy to explore slowly. Opening hours change by season and by events, so check the calendar before you go. If you have wondered whether the bullring is worth visiting in Madrid, the answer is yes for anyone interested in architecture, Spanish culture and history.

Getting to Las Ventas and Planning Your Visit

Las Ventas is on the eastern edge of the centre, in the Ventas area. The metro station is named Ventas and is served by lines 2 and 5, so you can arrive in about 15 minutes from Sol. The entrance for the tour is signposted at the plaza, and the exact meeting point is shown on your voucher.

Allow around an hour and a half for the tour and museum. The best time to visit is in the morning, before the crowds and the afternoon heat. Combine it with lunch in the neighbourhood or a walk in the Retiro Park, a few metro stops away.
